But before these simian soldiers followed him into war, their ruler, the monkey king Bali, commanded them all.A meditation on justice, ethics and morality, Adishakti’s Bali is a retelling of the crucial events that led to the death of the titular character, which set the rest of the story in motion. The play explores the notion of right or wrong through the different viewpoints of characters Bali, Tara, Sugreeva, Angadha, Rama and Ravana, while imploring the audience to take a step back from ideology and identity to answer the question: where does one draw the line? Adishakti’s brand of contemporary theatre is known for its visual spectacle and moments of intense emotions. Its hallmark style has evolved over years of research to include traditional performance forms and the martial art practice of kalaripayattu. Kalaa Utsavam - Indian Festival of ...
Adishakti has evolved into a purely physical craft for the stimulation of emotion and psychological expression. As breathing is the physical expression of thought and emotion, it implies that a particular emotion has a particular pattern of breath. In koodiyattam, an ancient form of Sanskrit theatre from Kerala, there existed the knowledge of eight breath patterns that corresponded to specific emotions as mentioned in the Natya Shastra(Sanskrit text on performing arts). It is apparent that this codification emerged from a study of breathing behaviour in everyday life.In this session, participants will learn about the eight patterns of breath corresponding to the eight emotions of koodiyattam, and explore varying degrees of emotions to communicate even the subtleties of heightened emotions. Participants will begin to discover the movement of the facial muscles, the eyes for different emotions and learn how to naturally shape the face with the breath. The workshop is open to actors and those from other disciplines.Wear comfortable outfit for easy bends and stretching.Recommended for ages 18 & aboveFor more details about Kalaa Utsavam 2018, visit www.esplanade.com/kalaautsavam
