Three Kin by T.H.E Dance Company
Three Kin is leading contemporary dance group T.H.E Dance Company’s closing production for the 2017 season and part of the company’s annual headlining showcase of creations by acclaimed Singaporean and international guest choreographers.Performed by T.H.E’s full-time principal dancers, the triple bill features Kuik Swee Boon’s fresh new interpretation of Water Bloom (a NUS Arts Festival 2009 commission) and two new creations by resident South Korean choreographer Kim Jae Duk, and Spanish choreographer Dimo Kirilov Milev respectively.About the works and choreographersWater Bloom, by Kuik Swee Boon – In 2009, Water Bloom explored the fragile relationship between Man and nature using a striking visual: the suffocating promulgation of red sea reefs arising from man-made water pollution, disrupting the ocean’s food chain, and therefore Man’s food sources. Today, environmental awareness and activism, are hot-button topics, with consumer habits tied to an awareness of numerous factors: sustainability, eco-friendly practices, ethical labour conditions, and most significantly; a pro-conservation conscience that is living amidst the consequences of the Industrial Revolution and climate change. In the 2017 iteration, Water Bloom thematic message is more urgent than over. The dancers embody the urgency of these issues whilst conveying that there is no simple solution: change must happen: beginning from an individual consciousness, that ignites larger, joint and sustained efforts.Kim Jae Duk – Kim has choreographed a new work for T.H.E every year since 2011 (collaborative work RE:OK…BUT!; Hey Man; Present; collaborative work Organised Chaos; Mr. Sign; Equilibrium), promises a kinetic new piece that delivers the best of both worlds in music (original composition by Kim) and dance movement filled with power, wit and humour.Dimo Kirilov Milev – Former Spanish Compania Nacional de Danza principal dancer Dimo Kirilov first worked with T.H.E’s principal company in 2013, creating the well-received Collisions for the DiverCity – a work described by The Straits Times as “explor(ing) the complexity of modern human relationships… each duet possess(ing) its own distinct flavour coupled with brilliant execution”; and by the Flying Inkpot, “the dynamism, athleticism and aesthetics… were breathtaking. All the dancers played their roles with individuality, finesse and strong technique.” Kirilov had recently performed at the M1 CONTACT Festival in end June 2017, and continued in residency with T.H.E Dance Company until August – this first part of the new creation. He returns in November – December to continue working and for the premiere of the creation.Photo Credits: Bernie Ng, Tan Ngiap Heng & Liu Yong Huay
Darwin, fallait-il le tuer? (CANCEL...
