Tchaikovsky & Arensky Piano Trios
Brownhill Consultancy presents the Incursion Trio's "Tchaikovsky & Arensky," a Tuesday evening concert at the Esplanade Recital Studio. Escape the summer heat of Singapore and take on a breathtaking journey to the summit of Russian romanticism with this passionate program. Written in 1881-1882 and 1894 respectively, the piano trios by Tchaikovsky and Arensky reflect the era's refined melancholia and tumultuous passion.Tchaikovsky's Piano Trio in A minor op. 50, subtitled “In Memory of a Great Artist”, was dedicated to the composer’s close friend, the virtuoso pianist Nikolai Rubinstein. Considered the most difficult piano piece Tchaikovsky has ever written, it became the composer’s own elegy later in 1893, being played at the memorial services in Moscow and St Petersburg. Tchaikovsky’s friendship and music had a significant influence on Arensky’s composition. The former’s epic piano trio had impressed the latter to a great extent and in 1894 Arensky also wrote a trio in memory of a remarkable musician. Arensky dedicated his Piano Trio No. 1 in D minor Op. 32 to Karl Davydov, a friend that Tchaikovsky nicknamed the “Tsar of cellists”. Celebrating Davydov and his achievements, this suite shines a spotlight on the cello. Formed in 2008, Incursion Trio has performed extensively in Singapore and overseas, interpreting a wide range of repertoire including German classic, Russian romantic, French modernist and Singaporean contemporary music. The exquisite rendition of this epic Russian program by the world-class Singaporean musicians Beatrice Lin(piano), Yi Li Siew(violin), and Juan Lin(cello) is sure to be a rare treat to the ears of the music loving public at the Esplanade. For further details visit brownhillconsultancy.com and incursiontrio.com

The central hymn from Haydn’s Emperor Quartet was the national anthem of Austria for a time, while Mozart’s Prussian Quartets, written with the Prussian King’s interest in the cello in mind, were published two weeks after his premature death.
SSO CHAMBER SERIES: FRENCH FLAVOURS
Musicians of the SSOThe mercurial and expressive flavour of the French colour this varied programme, featuring the sublime combination of flute, viola and harp via Debussyian Impressionism; the sultry strains of songs from Gershwin’s Porgy and Bess and the unduly neglected music of George Onslow, a 19th century French composer of English descent.
SSO CHAMBER SERIES: RUSSIAN AT HEAR...
Alina Ibragimova, violinMusicians of the SSORussian-British violinist Alina Ibragimova joins SSO musicians in an all-Russian programme across three Russian greats in their characteristic musical modes. The sweet yearnings of Tchaikovsky’s lyricism give way to the impish energy of Prokofiev and finally to the dark astringency and twilit enigma of Shostakovich’s Third String Quartet, which he considered one of his best.
SSO CHAMBER SERIES: THE GLORY OF BA...
Peter Hanson, violin/ conductorSSO MusiciansFrom Gabrieli to Handel, take a trip with UK period instrument violinist Peter Hanson through the elegance and riches of the Baroque greats, whose genius is displayed in their rich writing for voice and instrument – for which they often treated one like the other. A multitude of solos is key to the design of the concerto grosso, a compact instrumental showcase that the likes of Biber and Vivaldi developed to spectacular heights. Arias from Handel’s most popular oratorio, Messiah, are just a tiny sample of the vast treasure troves of Baroque musical drama. Purcell’s pioneering work setting English language theatre music, and the lively dance-operas of French Baroque master, Jean-Philippe Rameau, equally deserve your listening ear.
The Memory of Water
This Olivier award winning comedy is laced with a hint of melancholy along with the hauntings of nostalgia.Their mother Vi has just died, so three sisters Teresa, Mary and Catherine along with their significant others, arrive at the family home to arrange Vi’s funeral in The Memory of Water by Shelagh Stephenson. At family occasions like this you would expect much reminiscing and bickering … and this comedy certainly doesn’t disappoint.Teresa is the neurotic owner of a sinking business dealing in alternative therapies. She also struggles with resentment that she’s been left to care for their dying mother. Mary now a doctor, is in a long-term affair with a married man. Along with her more pragmatic outlook on life, she carries a further sad and shameful secret from her past. The youngest sister is the seemingly feckless and wayward Catherine, who lives abroad and thinks the whole world revolves around her. She craves to be noticed all the time much to the annoyance of her sisters. The three sisters now live far apart from each other reflecting lives which have taken different paths over the years. Coming together at long last for this family event would surely be a time to unite over shared stories? After all, the three of them were all brought up the same. Weren’t they? As their stories unfold, the family strains and their individual demons emerge alongside their alternative versions of the same past, converging to unveil their different perspectives. Tensions arise as they argue over conflicting revelations of the truth but at the end of the day, they are and remain, family. In playwright Shelagh Stephenson’s exploration of remembering and the dynamics of family life, we find that memory – depending on the beholder - can be fluid. As each sister is affected in the present by their own view of family history, so is the way that they are each affected by grief.Watched over by the ghost of their newly deceased Mother, whose own mind was clinically degenerating by the onset of dementia, this isn’t just a story about phantoms from the past. There is much knock-about laughter as we recognise the dark humour among family life … and death
