Ayer Di-Tetak Takleh Putus
This Wayang Peranakan gives insights as to the kind of lives the Peranakan led, post World War II. Most Peranakans lost their men as the Japanese were wary of them being spies for the British since many were English educated. The women were left to fend for themselves and became heads of their respective households.Bibik Besair, Bibik Tengah and Bibik Bongso are sisters, the latter being the child of the second wife. The three of them grew up in the same household, hence they are very close. The songs, incidents, decisions truly reflect the Peranakan way of life during the 50s to the 60s.Bibik Besair has only one son, Khoo Hock Seng, who is married to Helen Sim, a Teochew lady, who graduated from a University in London. Bibik Besair was widowed early and brought her son up all by herself. Hock Seng is a very filial son. When he married Helen, he is torn between his wife and his mother as Helen does not get along with her mother-in-law. Bibik Tengah also had only one son. Both her son and daughter-in-law died in an accident. The dead couple left behind their only son, Tan Poh Chye, who is dim-witted. As he is the only decendant of Bibik Tengah she dotes on him.Bibik Bongsu, is a widow. She is childless and is happy having inherited large sums from her dead husbands. The three of them face various problems daily, relying on each other for comfort and treating each other as soulmates. Ultimately they realised through their adversities that blood is thicker than water.
Raga ULA by Bharathaa Arts
Ula is a body of devotional Tamil literature that dates back to the Pallava period (275 CE to 897 CE), focused on the veneration of a deity during a temple procession and expressed through the eyes of women. The first part of the ula typically exalts the bedecked idol with its entourage of gods, goddesses, sages and demi gods. In the second half, the deity is described through the seven stages of womanhood: as a playmate, a lover, or one who gives spiritual guidance. In this production, Bharathaa Arts presents a dance piece based on Chokkanadar Ula, which depicts seven images of the Lord Shiva in different ornaments and riding a series of vahana (chariots). Each image corresponds to a stage of womanhood.First performed by Anjana Anand in Chennai, 2012, as a solo piece, this restaging features female dancers of different ages reviving the beautiful ancient literature through bharatanatyam. With music by Seetarama Sarma, ULA will transport you back to a time where the temple was the cultural centre of poetry, music and dance.

The Studios 2019: Rubber Girl on th...
Urban legend has it that Sophocles, the Granddaddy of Tragedy, died from holding his breath while reciting a particularly long line from Antigone, the story of a young woman from Thebes, who had the cheek to defy her uncle-ruler Creon to bury her brother Polyneices. Receiving a proper burial was a big deal then. The deceased without an appropriate send-off would be denied entry into the Underworld and forced to roam the shores of River Styx as a restless ghost forever. Antigone wasn’t about to let that happen. Her refusal to snap under pressure earned her the nickname, Rubber Girl.Rubber Girl is the proverbial rebel with a cause, a poster child for every generation, politicised by necessity to change her world. With their penchant for subverting constructs, Cake sets Thebes in a hallucinatory institution under the rule of three (Creons). TriCreon skulks the hallway with the violent physicality of West Papuan dancer Darlane Litaay, builds walls of sound with the cavernous beats of Berlin-based musician Matthias Engler, and dictates to the administration with the exacting vowels, consonants and diphthongs of Singapore actor Noorlinah Mohamed. In the airless school, Rubber Girl crumbles and rebounds with the angular athleticism of Australian dancer Sarah Chaffey. She embraces her nicotine-patched cousin-fiancé Haemon, speaks with the dead—including a bare-assed Polyneices—and wills us the courage to live life in accordance to our beliefs, without compromise, without hesitation, confronting fear, confronting death.Personal beliefs clash with the powers above and what a big bloody mess that can be.R18: Nudity

The Studios 2019: Miss British By ...
Who is Miss British? Is she the person wearing the crown or the one wearing the shackles? The person travelling first class or the one being trafficked? Miss British may be a poem; a movement; a song. She may be the mother of three and the sister of one; the lover of many, and the soon-to-be-bride. Miss British is everywhere, in everyone. She is a story of servitude and repetition.Based on an original idea by Sharon Frese, Miss British is a piece that excavates the prejudices and social hierarchies left behind by colonialism across the planet. Combining theatre, dance, and video installation, the piece is a voyage across the oceans of our shared pasts.Devised by The Art of Strangers in collaboration with Sharon Frese, Kalaiselvi Grace, Rebekah Sangeetha Dorai, Loo Zihan, Adrian Tan, Chan Silei, Riduan Zalani, and Chloe Chotrani.Director Felipe CerveraPerformersSharon FreseKalaiselvi GraceRebekah Sangeetha DoraiRiduan ZalaniAdvisory: Some mature themes and coarse language There will be post-show talks on 5 & 6 Apr, Fri & Sat.
