TheatreWorks Writers' Lab: N.O.W. 2019
Innocents (2012)
By Wong Chen-Hsi
Synopsis

Dir. Wong Chen-Hsi / 88 min / 2012 / Singapore / In English and Malay with English subtitles / Rating Parental Guidance

Set in 1980s Singapore, Innocents is a delicate coming of age story about Syafiqah, a young girl who, after being abandoned by her parents, befriends an ostracised boy, Ah Huat. Misunderstood and bullied, both outcasts escape into their own world of fantasy and freedom – until tragedy strikes. Gently immersive with sensitive imagery and honest performances, the film investigates memories of childhood within the landscape of a swiftly evolving city state.

Innocents won awards at major international film festivals, including Best Director (Asian New Talents Award), Best Screenplay (Ourense IFF) and the Jury Prize (Films de Femmes Creteil).

Dir. Benedetta Argentieri / 74min / 2018 / Afghanistan, Iraq & Syria / In English, Arabic, Kurdish, Pashtun, Daari with English subtitles / Rating: To Be AdvisedI Am The Revolution is an inspiring documentary about three women living in Afghanistan, Syria, and Iraq. It highlights the strength of these women in the frontline, fighting for gender equality. Taking a journalistic approach, the film challenges the images of veiled, silent, and timid women in the Middle East and instead shows the strength of women rising up on the front lines, in remote villages, and in city streets, to claim their voice and their rights.

TheatreWorks Writers' Lab: N.O.W. 2019 Nimita’s Place: Staged Reading By Akshita Nanda
Nimita’s Place is a story of two women, both named Nimita. Two generations apart, yet the two Nimitas face the same quandaries: Is history repeating itself? With the staged reading, director Edith Podesta navigates the real and the fictional by making audible the voices of the readers who have read the book. Weaving in verbatim texts with the book’s narratives, the reader is brought into Nimita’s world as another character. In doing so, the readers’ connections with the characters and themes in Nimita’s Place are revealed.Directed by Edith Podesta.
