《临川四梦》之《牡丹亭》 Four Dreams in the Camellia Hall – The Peony Pavilion by Shanghai Kunqu Opera Troupe 上海昆剧团
Du Liniang is the daughter of a high-ranking official. After dreaming of a young scholar she meets in a peony pavilion, Du wakes up and wastes away her life pinning for the scholar before passing away with a broken heart. Her devotion moves the underworld. Three years later, scholar Liu Mengmei chances upon Du’s portrait in the garden where she is buried beside the peony pavilion. Convinced that he has met Du before, a sense of romantic déjà vu fills him. His exhortations of love bring Du back to life and the lovers reunite for a happy ending,Regarded as one Tang Xianzu’s most celebrated work, The Peony Pavilion weaves a tale of love with the beauty of nature through the usage of lyrical metaphor. Cast: Li An, Shen YiliAbout Four Dreams in the Camellia Hall For every Kunqu performer, it is a dream to be a part of Four Dreams in the Camellia Hall. Written by influential Ming dynasty playwright Tang Xianzu, it is a collection of four outstanding classic operas regarded for its culture value and philosophical thoughts. Author Wang Siren, Tang’s contemporary, summarised the collection as chivalry (A Pair of Purple Hairpins), love (The Peony Pavilion), Buddhist meditation (A Dream Under the Southern Bough) and immortality (The Tale of Handan). These four dreams are the crystallisation of Tang’s experiences, insights and artistry, and have long been regarded as the benchmark of excellence for Kunqu works. Four centuries later, the incomparable brilliance of these Four Dreams still shines bright. To mark the 400th anniversary of Tang Xianzu’s passing in 2016, Shanghai Kunqu Opera Troupe began touring performances of Four Dreams in the Camellia Hall to various parts of the world. The performances were well-received regionally and internationally in major Chinese cities, as well as in USA, Czech Republic and Belgium. The Shanghai Kunqu Opera Troupe believes in respecting and revering tradition and is dedicated to the continuation and promotion of Kunqu. This is the spirit which the troupe adopted in their approach towards the production of the Four Dreams. A dream unfolds each evening, and over the course of four nights, the troupe weaves a cohesive experience for audiences through imaginative staging that brings alive the literary beauty of Tang’s words and the aesthetic essence of Kunqu. These works are performed by opera icons as well as younger performers who are given the opportunity to share the stage with Kunqu masters. The result is an elegant expression of Kunqu that is both precise and nuanced — a worthy homage to one of the oldest opera genres in the world.

《临川四梦》之《紫钗记》 Four Dreams in the Camellia Hall – A Pair of Purple Hairpins by Shanghai Kunqu Opera Troupe 上海昆剧团
The shortest of the Four Dreams, A Pair of Purple Hairpins is also the most evocative. Scholar Li Yi falls in love with famous courtesan Huo Xiaoyu and becomes man and wife. However, their relationship was persecuted by military official Lu, and the pair were separated. Huo is consumed with longing for Li. In a dream, she meets a chivalrous knight who is dressed in yellow robes and carries a fine sword. He gifts her with a pair of embroidered shoes (the Chinese pronunciation of shoes is a homonym of the Chinese word for harmony), and she sees this as a sign that the star-crossed couple will find their way back to each other. In reality, a happy ending would have been virtually impossible under the same circumstances. The knight in yellow robes is a symbol of resistance towards authoritarian power and expresses Tang’s hope of a better world.Cast: Li An, Shen YiliAbout Four Dreams in the Camellia Hall For every Kunqu performer, it is a dream to be a part of Four Dreams in the Camellia Hall. Huayi 华艺节 2020 7 Sages of the Bamboo Grove 竹林七贤 Toy Factory Productions (Singapore) TOY 肥料厂(新加坡)
This is a surveillance state. The Organisation reigns supreme over the governance of the known world. Led by Cao Shuang, it controls the basic free will of all men using technology as its weapon—impelling everyone to wear a specially-programmed headset that instructs, controls and eavesdrops. A new law is implemented, forbidding artistic endeavours like music, entertainment, poetry or prose. Acts of disobedience lead to immediate arrest, imprisonment without trial, or worse—execution.Everyone obeys, with the exception of The Organisation’s arch-nemeses, seven revolutionaries who are artists by nature — Ji Kang, Ruan Ji, Shan Tao, Xiang Xiu, Liu Ling, Ruan Xian and Wang Rong. Placated neither by the lure of wealth nor the promise of power, their resistance soon captures the attention of their cagey government. Under the watchful eyes of The Organisation’s Head of Surveillance, Ma Siyi, the painter loses possession of his brush, the poet is prohibited from writing, the dancer no longer moves freely and the musician is forbidden to compose. Mosaic Music Series Ludovico Einaudi (Italy) Seven Days Walking
Popular contemporary classical icon Ludovico Einaudi makes his Singapore debut at the Esplanade Concert Hall. One of the most important composers of the current day, Einaudi is the “world’s most streamed classical music artist” (NY Times), best-known for his numerous heart-breaking and beautiful film scores, bestselling solo albums and stunning live performances. He rose to prominence when his performance on a grand piano in the Arctic as glaciers crumbled around him was captured for a Greenpeace campaign.Drawing from a wide range of influences from neo-classical, ambient, folk, pop, rock and experimental forms, Einaudi presents his signature style through his highly anticipated works from his latest and most ambitious project to date, Seven Days Walking. This project features seven albums released over seven months in 2019, inspired by a winter’s walk through the Alps. The first album of the project, Seven Days Walking: Day One became the fastest-streamed classical album of all time when it was released in Mar 2019.Joined by cellist Redi Hasa and violinist and violist Federico Mecozzi, Einaudi presents an unmissable multi-sensory immersive experience enhanced by atmospheric visual projections.“The idea first came to me as I was listening to the recordings of the first sessions: each version seemed to me to have its own personality, with subtleties so distinct from one another that I was unable to choose which I preferred. I associated everything with walking, with the experience of following the same routes over and over, discovering new details each time.”– Ludovico Einaudi on Seven Days Walking.

“Obsessed. Too good” – Stereofox“Every bit as enchanting as we hoped” – Under the Radar Mag“Nice and chilled" – Huw Stephens, BBC Radio 1“A thing of fragile beauty...” – Drowned in SoundKnown for his delicate and airy falsetto paired beautifully with instrumental accompaniments, Welsh singer-songwriter Novo Amor (aka Ali Lacey) promises an unmissable evening—“one of trembling, spectral beauty” (MOJO).Be transported to a space filled with Novo Amor’s beautiful soundscapes, as Lacey performs with frequent collaborator Ed Tullett, backed by a full band featuring strings, keys, guitars and drums. Producing music since 2012, Lacey has been winning over fans with his soulful sound and minimalist lyrics.About Novo AmorAfter returning to his family in Wales from America, Lacey took a job in an ice cream parlour and spent his free time writing songs. Written for a friend’s feature film in 2013, Lacey’s song From Gold seemed to unlock something in him. He began writing a collection of songs which would be released as the Woodgate EP the following year—songs inspired by his time by the lake in upstate New York that were tender, honest and lovestruck.Amongst the people he met during his career was songwriter and producer Ed Tullett, with whom he forged an immediate bond. Out of that friendship grew a musical collaboration, with a first single, Faux released in 2014 (premiered on NPR and featured on the TV series’ Bones and Pretty Little Liars), followed by the second, Alps, two years later, and then a full-length album, Heiress released via AllPoints.Novo Amor’s first solo full-length album, Birthplace (released October 2018 via AllPoints) was described by Lacey as “essentially a joyous and celebratory but slightly skewed look at the past” for him. The title song was accompanied by an ambitious and visually stunning music video, directed by Sil & Jorik, that commented on the global plastic waste epidemic. Featuring professional free diver Michael Board and a long whale model made from collected plastic waste, the video was reshared over 1,000 times and won awards including Best Video at the prestigious Camerimage International Film Festival and Independent Video of the Year at the 2018 AIM Awards.Continuing to highlight important global issues, directors Sil & Jorik and Novo Amor’s most recent collaboration is a 12-minute film set across two chapters, Sleepless and Repeat Until Death, which aims to shine a light on climate change and the devastating impact of air pollution in Mongolia.

《临川四梦》之《邯郸记》 Four Dreams in the Camillia Hall – The Tale of Handan by Shanghai Kunqu Opera Troupe 上海昆剧团
The down-and-out scholar Lu Sheng dreams of a life of fortune, power and women. He encounters the immortal Lu Dongbin who gifts him a porcelain pillow. That night, as Lu laid his head on the pillow, he dreams of becoming a top scholar and was married to a beautiful woman. In the dream, Lu experiences 50 years of highs and lows of fame as a high-ranking official, only to wake up to the stark reality that the yellow millet porridge that had been simmering away in a nearby shop before he fell asleep was still not cooked. He had crested heights of achievement and fallen from grace only in his dreams. Enlightened, Lu decides to follow the immortal Lu Dongbin and no longer covets worldly desires.Capturing the seamy side of officialdom in a feudal society, Tang Xianzu wrote the play a year after he retired as an official and returned to his hometown. The Tale of Handan is often regarded as the most remarkable literary masterpieces amongst the Four Dreams.Cast: Zhang Wei Wei, Chen LiAbout Four Dreams in the Camillia HallFor every Kunqu performer, it is a dream to be a part of Four Dreams in the Camellia Hall.

Huayi 华艺节 2020 The Four Beauties 四大美人 Shanghai Pingtan Troupe (China) 上海评弹团(中国)
With a history dating back to the late Ming dynasty, come experience a performance of elegant storytelling set to music as traditional pingtan makes its debut at Esplanade.Originating in Suzhou over 400 years ago, pingtan is a genre of musical storytelling. Performed in the Suzhou dialect, which is famous for its melodious and lilting qualities, pingtan is a combination of two Chinese narrative folk art forms—pinghua (narration without music) and tanci (narration with music accompaniment). For one night only, the renowned Shanghai Pingtan Troupe will perform stories of The Four Beauties of ancient China—Xi Shi, Diao Chan, Wang Zhaojun and Yang Guifei. Beyond waxing lyrical about the allure of the four beauties, the performance will creatively narrate the touching sacrifices the four made for their country and its people. What is Pingtan? Two chairs flanking a small table, a woodblock for creating sounds and rhythm to draw attention, a folding fan and a stringed musical instrument (either sanxian or a pipa)—this simple stage set-up coupled with melodic narration evokes the listeners’ imaginations as the performers tell stories about battle tales and heartrending romances. The art of pingtan was listed as one of China’s intangible cultural heritage by the Ministry of Culture of China in 2006. About Shanghai Pingtan Troupe Founded in 1951, Shanghai Pingtan Troupe is the first national pingtan troupe of China and widely regarded as one of the best. Over the last few decades, the troupe has made significant contributions to the cultivation and development of this traditional art form. The renowned troupe has received many accolades for its exquisite performances. The troupe presents over 4,000 performances yearly in China and has been invited to showcase this intangible cultural heritage to audiences around the world including Europe, America and parts of Asia.
