Staatskapelle Dresden (Germany)
Myung-Whun Chung, conductor
Sunwook Kim, piano

Beethoven Piano Concerto No.5
Brahms Symphony No.2

The Staatskapelle Dresden, led by Principal Guest Conductor Myung-Whun Chung and joined by award-winning South Korean pianist Sunwook Kim, presents an elegant evening of classical music by Beethoven and Brahms.

Founded by Prince Elector Moritz von Sachsen in 1548, the Staatskapelle Dresden is one of the most celebrated and oldest orchestras in the world and is thus steeped in tradition. Over its long history, many distinguished conductors and internationally celebrated instrumentalists have left their mark on this one-time court orchestra. Previous music directors include Heinrich Schütz, Johann Adolf Hasse, Carl Maria von Weber, Richard Strauss and Richard Wagner, who called them his “Miraculous Harp”. It is also the only orchestra to be awarded the “European Prize for the Preservation of the World’s Musical Heritage” by the European Cultural Foundation.

Myung-Whun Chung began his musical career as a pianist, winning second prize at the Tchaikovsky Piano Competition in Moscow in 1974, and has been Principal Guest Conductor of the Staatskapelle Dresden since 2012. He has conducted some of the world‘s leading orchestras, including the Berliner Philharmoniker, Wiener Philharmoniker and Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra. The South Korean conductor has been the recipient of many honours and prizes for his artistic work, including the Premio Abbiati and the Arturo Toscanini prize in Italy and the Légion d’Honneur (1992) in France.

Lauded as one of the finest of his generation, South Korean pianist Sunwook Kim came to international recognition when he won the prestigious Leeds International Piano Competition at the age of 18 in 2006, becoming its first Asian winner. Since then, he has performed as concerto soloist with some of the world’s leading orchestras, including the London Symphony Orchestra, Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, NHK Symphony, and the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra for his BBC Proms debut. He has received outstanding reviews for several of his recordings, which include works by Beethoven and Brahms.

“This is one of the very few orchestras with its own distinctive sound.” – Gramophone

"The swell of suspended harmonies was perfectly controlled, the chords perfectly struck and voiced, and Kim always kept the sense of restless searching at just the right level of intensity – it’s all too easy to sound just lost in this piece." – The Guardian on Sunwook Kim

Esplanade Presents Jazz in July+ New Sounds in Afro-Cuban Jazz: Alfredo Rodríguez & Pedrito Martinez (Cuba)
Two powerhouse artists explore new sounds in Afro-Cuban Jazz.Grammy-nominated artists Alfredo RodrÍguez and Pedrito Martinez first worked together on Alfredo’s 2012 release Invasion Parade. Since that initial recording session they have had the rare occasion to perform together as a duo, leaving audiences completely mesmerized by their fearless and virtuosic playing. Each artist brings a different approach to the collaboration. A protégé of Quincy Jones, who took him under his wing when he defected to the US in 2009, RodrÍguez was schooled in the rigorous classical conservatories of Havana. His riveting artistry is informed as much by Bach and Stravinsky as it is by his Afro-Cuban and jazz roots. Martinez’s musical training came directly from the streets of the Cayo Hueso neighborhood of Old Havana in which he was raised and he has subsequently performed with artists such as Sting, Paul Simon, and Wynton Marsalis.YouTube

It is a sad, funny, astonishing, brilliant, interesting, thought-provoking and utterly energizing play.”– The Australian"A stunning theatrical work that makes the universe more understandable while also making it more mysterious. You can’t ask much more than from a work of art.”– The Boston GlobeAn international space race to the moon. An inevitable domestic reconciliation. A journey of pure theatrical magic.Set against a backdrop of the race to the moon between the Americans and the Russians, The Far Side of the Moon casts its cosmic gaze on Philippe, a struggling introverted philosopher, and his younger brother André, a successful TV weatherman—an estranged pair drawn together, coming to grips with the death of their mother.Internationally renowned Canadian theatre visionary Robert Lepage’s iconic The Far Side of the Moon premiered in Québec in 2000, and has since been presented in over 45 cities all around the world. Performed solo by the critically acclaimed Yves Jacques, Lepage’s master work of poignant storytelling is visually stunning and technically exquisite, an emotionally arresting exploration of both outer and inner space.About Robert Lepage and Ex MachinaRobert Lepage is a Canadian playwright, actor, film director, and stage director, recognised as an evocative scenographer and a magical storyteller. His company Ex Machina, which he started in 1994, is known to be one of the world’s most innovative companies, approaching projects with investigative workshops and ensemble-led research.Ex Machina’s creative team believes that the performing arts—dance, opera, music—should be mixed with recorded arts—filmmaking, video art and multimedia. It believes that there must be meetings between scientists and playwrights, set painters and architects, and between artists from Québec and the rest of the world. From these gatherings, it believes that new artistic forms will emerge.Lepage has been acknowledged by Le Monde as “a maestro of today’s multimedia theatre”. He has also been described as “a transformational catalyst as Peter Brook” who “[creates] theatre for people who don’t like theatre”.

da:ns series 2019 Paris Opera Ballet
da:ns focus: Forsythe A rule-breaker, risk-taker, he’s been hailed as ballet’s premier deconstructionist, postmodernist and a living legend—da:ns series 2019 shines a spotlight on William Forsythe through two of his major works created in 1988 and 2016, danced by two world renowned companies, Dresden Semperoper Ballett in March and Paris Opera Ballet in June. The world-famous Paris Opera Ballet was the birthplace of classical dance, with origins tracing back over more than 300 years. Since then, the company has never ceased to pursue excellence, establishing itself as a repertory company, remaining faithful to its dual vocation of ensuring the continuity of the repertoire and offering an open door towards creation. The company rarely tours to the region and in June 2019, Singapore audiences will be treated to the works of three renowned choreographers in one programme. The iconic dancemaker William Forsythe’s 2016 Blake Works I for the Paris Opera Ballet is said to be a moment as important as his In the Middle, Somewhat Elevated for the company in 1987. Almost 30 years later, he has taken a long and loving look at ballet’s past, and once again moved it into the future. Forsythe’s love letter to ballet is poetic, joyous and hopeful, where the technical heritage of the company shines through the dancers who perform to soulful ballads over electronic keyboard and syncopated percussion created by English musician James Blake.Jerome Robbins’ In the Night presents three elegant duets featuring vastly contrasting sets of lovers, from innocent to impetuous, who meet beneath a midnight sky. Premiered by the New York City Ballet in 1970 and included in Paris Opera Ballet’s repertory since 1989, the duets developed a metaphor of love in all its states, each choreographed to a different nocturne by Chopin.Created in 2016 for the Paris Opera Ballet by one of the most sought-after choreographers in dance today, Crystal Pite’s The Seasons’ Canon is a spectacular large ensemble work featuring 54 dancers performing the avant-garde update of Vivaldi’s Four Seasons, recomposed by Max Richter, a score that the Canadian choreographer had long ago fallen in love with. Drawing inspiration from the meticulous observation of natural phenomena, Pite imagined a series of succeeding, interlinking tableaux with highly structured formations more intricate than the next as the men and women soar in unison in pulsing, breathing masses.

The Seen and Unseen by Kamila Andini (Indonesia)
One day, 10-year-old Tantri comes to realise she will not have much more time with her bedridden twin brother Tantra, who is losing his senses one by one. Grappling with this reality, Tantri finds solace in the deepness and the darkness of night. Under a full moon, she dances, finding herself between reality and imagination, loss and hope. Tantri experiences a magical and emotional journey into womanhood that eclipses Tantra’s fading life. The Seen and Unseen (Sekala Niskala) is a new performance work, a cross-cultural collaboration between artists from Indonesia, Japan and Australia. Inspired by Indonesian filmmaker Kamila Andini’s film The Seen and Unseen, which has been described as “a truly singular film” (Cinema Scope) and “a haunting and hypnotic interpretation…rooted in Balinese arts and culture” (Variety). This live theatrical production is a visual feast incorporating dance, live music and song, and features an electronic score, creating a blend of traditional Balinese dance movement with a contemporary approach to theatre. Driving this production is the Balinese philosophy of Sekala Niskala (“the seen and unseen”), a fundamentally dualist spiritual structure that describes what we cannot see as having equal value to what is seen in the world.Directed by Kamila Andini (Indonesia), The Seen and Unseen (Sekala Niskala) features an all-child cast from Komunitas Bumi Bajra. Mosaic Music Series Death Cab for Cutie (USA)
“Death Cab for Cutie get reborn with Thank You For Today”– Rolling Stone“Comforting alt-rock melancholia”– The Guardian“For a band in its third decade…Death Cab hasn't lost its gift for pairing Gibbard's soft ruminations with propulsive arrangements that know just when to sparkle and sway.– NPR MusicHold on to your hearts. After more than a decade, Grammy-nominated indie rock darlings Death Cab for Cutie return to Esplanade for a one-night-only concert, performing familiar favourites and hits from their latest album Thank You For Today.Thank You for Today is the sound of Death Cab for Cutie both expanding and refining; a band 20 years into its evolution, still uncovering new curves in its signatures, new sonic corners to explore. Beautiful and dynamic, and darkly anthemic and bittersweet, Death Cab frontman Ben Gibbard weaves a thread throughout about how interconnected geography is with memory, and how hard it can be to hold onto places, and to people too.Rising from a side project and becoming one of the most exciting groups to emerge from the indie rock scene in the 2000s, the band has been nominated for eight Grammy Awards, including for Best Rock Album for their 2015 album Kintsugi.Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/album/6agCM9GJcebduMddgFmgsOGold Rush: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XTPZWG5eLf8I Will Follow You Into the Dark: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aoR0mGq_z2I
