Overture to Holidays
Synopsis

A rare chance to experience a trio of voice, string and piano will take you on a musical journey on November 28th at the Esplanade's Recital Studio. Violinist Siew Yi Li and pianist Beatrice Lin will create, together with soprano Sérine de Labaume, a delightful evening full of inviting and eclectic music not so often heard in Singapore.

From intense and erudite compositions of Camille Saint-Saëns and Frank Bridge to more popular approaches by Luigi Denza and Eldo di Lazzaro, the programme presents a wide range of music from the late 19th century to the early 20th century. Approachable and melodious music takes a big part of the evening's programme: Serenades and Romances by Diémer, Braga, Anton, Tosti... to name a few. After the intermission, Latin/Spanish flair in full swing, the audience will be treated to Berlioz's Bolero, Viardot's Habanera and Piazzolla’s Tango among others. The programme doesn't consist of only less-known pieces. Some very popular pieces such as Sarasate's 'Romanza Andalusa' and Gardel's 'Por una Cabeza' will also be heard.

Many of the pieces were written by the composers for this not-as-often-interpreted combination of string, voice and piano. A few were arranged by the musicians for this concert, and some remain duo as intended. Some melancholic, some exhilarating, and some, simply charming, this romantic and emotion (and surprise)-full programme promises an enchanting evening for music aficionados as well as first-time concert goers.

Beatrice Lin, piano

Beatrice graduated from the Royal Academy of Music and the Conservatoire de Musique de Genève where she was awarded the Adolphe Neuman prize from the canton of Geneva. She has performed widely in Switzerland, collaborating with instrumentalists, singers, choirs as well as contemporary music ensembles. Her two years of studies there also saw her being invited to perform in two live radio broadcasts on the Radio Suisse Romande Espace 2, as keyboardist with L’Orchestre de Chambre de Genève and Ensemble Contrechamps, and as repetiteur for the Geneva competition (Concours de Genève) in 2008.

Siew Yi Li, violin

A recipient of the Max-Jost foundation scholarship as well as the Rotary Club (Lausanne) violin recipient, Yi Li graduated from the class of world-renown concert violinist Pierre Amoyal (protégé of the legendary Jascha Heifetz) in the Conservatoire de Lausanne. He performs regularly both as soloist as well as in the orchestra and has since collaborated with orchestras such as the European Youth Chamber Orchestra of Styria, the Sinfonietta de Lausanne, Camerata de Lausanne, L’Orchestre de Chambre de Lausanne, Hankook Symphony Orchestra and the Singapore Lyric Opera Orchestra, to name a few. These performances and concert tours have brought him extensively to major cities in Europe and Asia.

Since his return to Singapore, Yi Li’s love for performing has seen him co-founding the Incursion Trio with pianist (and wife) Beatrice Lin and cellist Brandon Voo. The trio debuted in 2008 and their performances have since received critical acclaim with the Straits Times quoting them as “Polish, confidence...and lovely sound”. Besides their annual recitals in the Esplanade Recital Studio, recent highlights of the trio includes recital in Académie de Musique Tibor Varga in Sion, Switzerland as well as performance of Beethoven’s Triple Concerto in the Singapore Conference Hall. The Incursion Trio will be presenting the first of a series of concerts featuring Beethoven’s piano trio cycle this coming October.

A violinist since the age of nine, Yi Li also plays the viola and was under the tutelage of Singapore Symphony Orchestra concertmaster, Mr. Alexander Souptel before pursuing his studies overseas.

Sérine de Labaume, soprano

Soprano Sérine de Labaume began her musical training at the age of 4 with the violin.

Her voice study began with Mireille Alcantara, the then renowned professor at the CNSM de Paris. The Belgian Baritone Jose Van Dam described her voice as 'natural and agile.’ The Catalan Tenor Jaume Aragall and the American pianist Dalton Baldwin are also among other internationally acclaimed musicians who have complimented on her musicality and expressive stage presence.

Mainly appearing in France, Spain, Italy, South Korea and Belgium, she has also sung in Germany, Finland, Sweden, Japan and Singapore.

An accomplished visual artist, she has Bachelor’s degree in Studio Art and Master’s Degree in Environmental Art from New York University. Her mixed media works have been exhibited through solo and group shows in the USA, Italy, France, Singapore and South Korea.

Based in Singapore since 2012, she serves as the artistic director of Brownhill Consultancy and has curated several exhibitions including the FreshAir Fine Arts Festival 2013 / 2014 and Wo Men Women 2014 / 2015.
