The Studios 2018 I am trying to say something true
There is no new way to write about loss. At the heart of it the same old clichés live and breathe and repeat themselves: I miss him / I wake up thinking I’d still see her face / I miss his voice / that was her favourite shirt / I want to remember the smell of his hair – but this person is no longer there. They are no longer there. So instead this is a story about distance: the spaces between people and places, the gaps between past and present; and about living in the gulf between what we know and what we feel. Click here to see full lineup for The Studios 2018.Creative teamPlaywright Michelle TanDirector T. Huayi 华艺节 2018 Why We Chat? 聊斋 Edward Lam Dance Theatre (Hong Kong/Taiwan) 非常林奕华(香港/台湾)
A theatrical presentation on modern relationships and ghost stories, inspired by the classical Chinese literary collection Liaozhai Zhiyi (Strange Stories from a Chinese Studio).A wise man once said, “True love is like ghosts—you hear of them a lot, but few are those who actually come across one”.In a room of an established hotel, a businessman is gripped with boredom. His room telephone rings and he answers. It is a woman claiming to be a fellow hotel guest, calling a random room out of boredom. The two lonely souls make a bet with each other: whomever is able to tell a story that piques the other’s interest, wins the reward of seeing the other. So begins a cat-and-mouse game of storytelling as they wander all over the hotel through their stories, chasing demons, ghosts and each other. As story after story unfolds, the line between reality and fiction blurs.Ten years ago, award-winning director and actress Sylvia Chang first met popular actor David Wang in the play Design for Living. In Why We Chat?, they meet again. But this time, what are they? Restless humans? Relentless ghosts? Shape-shifting fox spirits?Directed by award-winning director Edward Lam and written by the highly sought-after playwright-actress Wong Wing Sze, Why We Chat? lets us gaze deep into ourselves, and into each other.“These days, we have so many ways of communicating with each other, but have people become afraid of engaging in real conversations? We float through the day, and come alive only at night. We take what we want from each other, but we resist giving ourselves to others. We constantly battle our emotional needs with the physical realities of everyday life. Are we becoming less human and more like ghosts? What if the fox spirit truly exists, a being who can see our innermost wants and desires and is able to hold all these up to the light?”– Edward Lam

In 2015, they released Seamonster, produced and recorded by Incognito leader and founder Jean-Paul “Bluey” Maunick in his personal studio in London; a collaboration that led the band to perform in the awe-inspiring O2 Arena in 2016. The growing reception of their work has brought the group to major stages in Asia such as Summer Sonic (Japan), Java Jazz Festival (Indonesia), Jarasum Jazz Festival (Korea), and the Melbourne International Jazz Festival. Following the release of their sophomore album TERRARIUM and the support of math-pop act ZA FEE DO and Romantic Records, they have recently completed a multi-city Japan tour, with Peter Barakan’s Live Magic! Festival being one of the highlights.https://www.facebook.com/thestevemcqueens.musicWONKAn experimental soul band from Tokyo, Japan, WONK’s Sep 2016 album Sphere received the Best Jazz Album award at the CD Shop Awards, based on votes by CD retailer employees. The band also produced the official remix for Blue Note Records star José James’ Love in a Time of Madness in his album Live Your Fantasy, in addition to conducting successful performances in Berlin and Paris in Feb 2017, reaching eager audiences in Japan and abroad. Huayi 华艺节 2018 Blood & Rose Ensemble 血与玫瑰乐队 Shakespeare’s Wild Sisters Group (Taiwan/Singapore) 莎士比亚的妹妹们的剧团(台湾/新加坡)
Blood & Rose Ensemble takes on Shakespeare’s “Wars of the Roses” history plays, putting a fresh, satirical and highly entertaining spin on the question of how history gets made. Between the beauty and violence of roses and bloodshed, how is history written and re-written? How are these histories told, and who gets to tell them?In this brilliantly-inventive staging, prodigious Taiwanese director Wang Chia-Ming plays the invisible DJ, spinning in the arena of history, as he boldly remixes cuts, characters, and conflicts of Shakespeare’s Henry VI and Richard III, whilst jockeying the talented ensemble of actors in a madcap two-hour journey. The actors toggle multiple roles – playing various characters and performing their own music live – and cross-fade seamlessly between improvisation and performance, as they hurtle us through the voices and interwoven (hi)stories of Henry VI and Richard III, only to find that the enduring truth of our time is the illusiveness of truth itself.A co-commission by Esplanade – Theatres on the Bay and The National Theater & Concert Hall, Blood & Rose Ensemble features Singapore theatre actor Oliver Chong, alongside nine illustrious Taiwanese theatre actors, in a performance that is as disquieting a requiem to the blood and beauty of the historic Wars, as it is a striking indictment of truth in our post-truth times.

Kalaa Utsavam - Indian Festival of Arts 2017 Agam
“… Agam’s musical oeuvre also included some expansive alapanas, swara-play and languidly-paced ghazals. All fitted amazingly into the East-West sonic blend.” - The HinduTake the sounds of Dream Theater, Rush and Iron Maiden, mix them with the musical idioms of carnatic music, and what you get is a scintillating contemporary sound that appeals to the young and old alike. That’s the music of Agam, a group of carnatic rockers part of the new generation of musicians who are reinventing the classical experience. This November, the multiple award-winning band returns to Esplanade with their first full-length concert outside of India.Derived from an ancient Tamil word, the name Agam means “inner self” and is the group’s creative mantra, so to speak. The Bangalore-based band describes its music as carnatic meets progressive rock, the combination of classical melodic scales and rhythm structures, and western aesthetic principles.Formed in 2003 by a group of former schoolmates, the seven-man outfit got their break in 2007 after winning a national televised band hunt judged by Oscar-winning Indian composer, AR Rahman. Following gigs around South India, Agam went on to perform at high profile music festivals in India, which gained them popularity on a national level.Their debut album, The Inner Self Awakens, was released in 2012 with over 4,000 copies sold, topping the independent album chart on Flipkart. Regular performers at South India’s Hard Rock Café, they have also appeared on television, most notably on MTV’s Coke Studio as a featured producer. The group also collaborates with musicians, including highly-acclaimed playback singer Shreya Ghoshal and Aruna Sairam, to name a few.

Kalaa Utsavam - Indian Festival of Arts 2017 from: The Platform by Chowk Productions (Singapore) An Esplanade Commission
“…I spent the entire day on the terrace of a café in a little square watching life pass by; the hustle and bustle, the milling of tourists, natives and workers. And none of the people knew anything of each other...” – Peter Handke, 1992Have you ever watched strangers on the street and wondered what their lives might be like? What are the stories behind their actions and movements? And how might you be connected to them in this great big world? In 1992, experimental Austrian dramatist Peter Handke (Offending the Audience, Wings of Desire) premiered The Hour We Knew Nothing of Each Other, a one-act wordless play about the things that happen in a day at an unspecified town square. The 105-minute piece, which consisted of 450 characters played by 27 actors doing absurd actions and movements, was a phenomelogical exercise in the first-person experience: people-watching.In Raka Maitra’s latest production, the dancer-choreographer takes inspiration from Handke’s landmark work to the railway platform, melding dance and theatre into a series of wordless movements based on everyday gestures, filled with strong imagery and fleeting glimpses of stories.Described by Dance Europe as “without doubt a dancer of the 21st century”, Maitra defies the conventional dichotomy of classical and contemporary with her expansion of new vocabularies and contexts of odissi. A disciple of odissi dancer Madhavi Mudgal, she was awarded the Shringarmani, a national level award for odissi. Several of Maitra’s recent works were inspired by Indian writers and poets.About CHOWK Productions and Raka MaitraFounded in 2007 by Raka Maitra, CHOWK creates artistic productions, engages in research and provides dance classes. Its vision is to be recognised internationally for creating dance that moves and speaks without borders. The company’s artistic productions include full-length contemporary dance works that have been commissioned by local theatres and festivals in Singapore, which have toured internationally. Maitra’s dance language draws from the martial arts and classical Indian dance. From 2007-2011, Maitra was an associate artist with The Substation.
