The MANdolin & Beyond 2019
Synopsis

The MANdolin & Beyond is an Arte Compass initiative started in 2016 as a tribute to the Legendary Mandolin Maestro U. Shrinivas (28 February 1969 – 19 September 2014). Late Maestro Padma Shri U. Shrinivas the rarest of musical geniuses, embodied the change that stretched beyond time and boundaries, fusing Indian classical music with other forms of world music. He was also regarded as the Mozart of classical Indian music.

The phenomenal success of the first edition inspired Arte Compass to make this an annual Tribute to the MAN who continues to inspire us. The 4th edition of Mandolin & Beyond in 2019 will also be a significant concert to mark the 50th Birth Anniversary of Shri U. Shrinivas. The event is on Saturday, 2nd March, 2019 7:30pm at Esplanade Concert Hall.

The 2019 edition will be a musical concert with a mix of Classical, Contemporary & Fusion by an ensemble of world class musicians celebrating the legacy of U. Shrinivas. 
Featuring some of the world’s renowned musicians with whom the late Maestro U. Shrinivas has collaborated with namely, his brother U. Rajesh (Mandolin), Purbayan Chatterjee (Sitar), Ustad Fazal Qureshi (Tabla), Stephen Devassy (Keyboard), Pete Lockett (Drums) along with Vijay Prakash (Vocals).


Presented by Integr8 Fuels DMCC, this Event is brought to you by ARTE COMPASS PTE LTD, in association with AGROCORP INTERNATIONAL & SHRINIVAS INSTITUTE OF WORLD MUSIQUE (SIOWM), Chennai. U Shrinivas set up SIOWM where he identified talented students and provided complementary training. His legacy at SIOWM is continued by his younger brother, Mandolin Maestro U Rajesh. The event is also supported by the High Commission of India, Singapore.

U. Rajesh (Mandolin)

He is a renowned mandolin player, the younger brother of the late Sri U. Srinivas, who was prominent in bringing this Italian instrument to the stage of Indian classical music.

Rajesh's credentials include either touring or recording with some of the big names in the music business - besides his Guru & older brother U. Shrinivas, there is Ustad Zakir Hussain, Ustad Sultan Khan, Louis Banks, Ranjit Barot, Mike Marshall, multi-percussionists Sivamani & Pete Lockett, Karsh Kale and Greg Ellis. He also performed live with the Johannesburg Philharmonic Orchestra and KNZ Philharmonic Orchestra.

Purbayan Chatterjee (Sitar) http://www.purbayan.com/

Sitar Maestro Purbayan Chatterjee is one of the top sitar players. He is carrying forward the rich legacy of Maihar gharana. He is known for amalgamating traditional Indian classical music with contemporary world music genres.

Noted for his fine sense of rhythm, versatility and eloquence, he has expanded his horizons into Jazz and Western Classical Music. He performs both as a soloist and an accompanist. He is associated with Mynta, his World Music band based in Sweden that has travelled the world over and have released six immensely popular albums.

Fondly called as ‘Flying Fingers’ he is sought after by all leading international artistes as he is able to adapt to different styles and genres with rapid speed, clear definition and a sure shot delivery.

Stephen has performed with the world renowned Ustad Zakir Hussain, the late U Srinivas, Dominique Piazza, Ustad Amjad Ali Khan and Sivamani. His close association with the Oscar winning AR Rahman, as keyboard player and the ‘Jai ho tour’ is noteworthy.

Pete Lockett is an English percussionist and recording artist. Lockett is known as a versatile and prolific percussionist, collaborating with many artists. He is well-versed in percussion traditions from music cultures around the world, from traditional Carnatic and Hindustani music of North and South India to traditional Japanese taiko drumming, with a style ranging from blues, funk and rock to classical, folk and ethnic and from Arabic to Electronic. He is well-versed in percussion traditions from music cultures around the world.

Vijay Prakash is a renowned playback singer and music composer. He has worked across the Indian Film Industry including Hindi, Kannada, Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam and Marathi movies. He has featured in MTV Coke Studio and has collaborated with musicians Ustad Zakir Hussain and AR Rehman. He is also one of four artists credited for the song "Jai Ho", which won the 2008 Academy Award for Best Original Song.
