W!LD RICE’s Mama White Snake

Written by ALFIAN SA’AT
Directed by PAM OEI

This holiday season, W!LD RICE proudly presents Mama White Snake, the perfect musical for the entire family! Full of heart, humour and home truths, this epic adventure puts a cheeky, charming spin on the classic Chinese folk tale, Madam White Snake.

For all his young life, Meng has dreamt of adventures beyond the confines of Emei Mountain. But his mother and aunt have always kept him close, warning him of the dangers and strangers lurking in the outside world.

Finally, Meng decides he has had enough of the creature comforts of home. Striking out on his own, he enrols in a martial arts school run by the mysterious Master Fahai.

There, he finds new friends and new love… even as old secrets from his family’s past slither to the surface. Fahai soon realises that Meng has been kept in the dark about who his mother and aunt really are: the magical White Snake and Green Snake of legend!

What will Meng do when he learns of his true heritage? Will Fahai succeed in driving a wedge between Meng and his mum? And, as chaos breaks out between enemies old and new, can true love overcome ancient rivalries and family quarrels?

Directed by Pam Oei, Mama White Snake features a sparkling script by Alfian Sa’at and a delightful score by Elaine Chan. For the first time in 30 years, Glen Goei returns to the Singapore stage in the title role – forming a celestial sister act with Ivan Heng as Green Snake. Together, they lead a stellar cast that includes Siti Khalijah Zainal, Zelda Tatiana Ng, Cheryl Tan, Andrew Marko and the First Stage Kids.

Mama White Snake promises to be the most hilarious, moving new musical of 2017! Don’t missssss it!

The Ngee Ann Kongsipresents W!LD RICE’s Grandmother Tonguewritten & directed by THOMAS LIM starring JALYN HAN, TAN SHOU CHEN & REI POHGrandmother Tongue, the sold-out smash hit of the 2016 Singapore Theatre Festival, returns for a limited season! In a Singapore where dialects have been losing relevance for generations, Grandmother Tongue traces a young man’s struggle to connect with his 84-year-old Teochew-speaking grandmother. He teaches her to use a mobile phone. He helps her buy her favourite brand of soya sauce. He visits her in hospital after a fall. Along the way, he begins to understand just what it means to spend decades in linguistic and cultural exile.Inspired by Kuo Pao Kun’s seminal Mama Looking For Her Cat, Thomas Lim’s funny, insightful play examines the social costs of our mother-tongue language policy and the erasure of dialects in today’s Singapore. In ways both humorous and heartbreaking, Grandmother Tongue explores how our identities are bound up with the languages that we use and the ones that we lose.Performed in Teochew, Mandarin and English, with English and Chinese surtitles.TALKBACK THURSDAY Meet the artists and deepen your experience of the play in these lively post-show discussions on Thursdays 5 Oct, 12 Oct and 19 Oct 2017.SIGN LANGUAGE INTERPRETED PERFORMANCE As part of W!LD RICE's commitment to diversity and inclusion, the 8pm performance on Sat 14 Oct 2017 will be simultaneously interpreted in Singapore Sign Language (SgSL) for the deaf and hearing impaired.
