Cabaret
Synopsis

What good is sitting alone in your room? Come hear the music play…

Willkommen, Bienvenu, Welcome….to the Stage Club’s presentation of “Cabaret”, one of the most memorable and ground-breaking musicals of all time.

Loosely based on Christopher Isherwood’s novel “Goodbye to Berlin”, Cabaret opened on Broadway in 1966.  It became a huge hit, chalking up almost 1,200 performances and inspiring numerous productions and revivals around the world, as well as the spectacular 1972 film of the same name. Directed by Bob Fosse and starring Liza Minnelli, Michael York and Joel Grey, the movie garnered six Oscars.

The story is set in Berlin in 1931, as the Weimar Republic, established after World War One, begins to crumble and the Nazis start their rise to power.  It centres on life in and around the Kit Kat Klub nightclub, through the lives of singer Sally Bowles, her lover Cliff Bradshaw and their friends.

Cabaret achieves its dramatic impact through contrasting the decadence of the Kit Kat Klub’s cabaret show with the violence and anti-semitism being unleashed on German society by the Nazis.  (Observant theatre-goers may reflect on some similarities with the arc of present-day politics, in certain parts of the world.)

What audiences are sure to take home are memories of the show’s stunning dance routines and unforgettable songs.  From expressive solos to full-scale production numbers, Cabaret’s music will linger in the memory long after the curtain goes down.

Director Asha Peppiatt brings to Cabaret her international experience of directing, producing and choreographing more than 40 shows. Cabaret runs from 9th to 12th May at the KC Arts Centre.  Tickets available at SISTIC.
