Brahms' 4th with Neil Varon
Synopsis

Neil Varon, Professor of Conducting at the Eastman School of Music joins the Musicians’
Initiative in November! Together, we will present some of the staples of the symphonic genre:
Brahms’ 4th Symphony, along with Beethoven’s Egmont Overture and Faure’s Pelléas et Mélisande.

Neil Varon’s conducting career spans over 40 years and several continents, and he has built an outstanding reputation as a symphonic and operatic conductor as well as a teacher. Born in New York in 1950, Varon studied piano, composition, and conducting at the Juilliard School.
After early positions in Istanbul, Vienna and Nuernberg , he was named first Kapellmeister of
the Deutsche Opera am Rhein in Düsseldorf in 1980, and in 1987 he became music director of the Südwestfälische Philharmonic. He kept this position until 1990, when he was appointed
general music director of the City of Gelsenkirchen, Germany. In that capacity, he brought
international names to his theater, including Helen Donath, Frank Peter Zimmermann, and
Franco Gulli.

Varon has been a frequent guest in Asia. He conducted the Korean Symphony in Seoul, the
Yomiuri Nippon Symphony in Tokyo, and the Kyushu Philharmonic in Fukuoka. In 1991 and
1992, he led the Tokyo Philharmonic in a series of performances of The Magic Flute for the
Mozart Festival in Japan. More recently he led a performance of Beethoven’s Ninth in Daegu,
South Korea.

Neil Varon was named Professor of Conducting and Music Director of the Eastman Philharmonia, Eastman School Symphony, and Chamber Orchestras in 2002, and appointed full professor with tenure in 2005. He has developed very successful summer orchestral conducting master classes at Eastman with the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra, as well as master classes in Cologne, Siegen, and Nuremberg in 2010. He made his debut with the Rochester Philharmonic in 2011, his RPO subscription series debut in 2013, and has also led Around the Town concerts with the orchestra. In spring 2014, he lead Symphoria (formerly the Syracuse Symphony Orchestra) in an upstate New York tour.

In the past year Varon once again conducted at the University of British Colombia, as well as
giving masterclasses in Conducting at the Eastman School of Music with the Rochester
Philharmonic, as well as the Florida International University, the University of Oregon, and the
Cincinnati Conservatory of Music.

In his role as Chief Conductor of the Eastman Philharmonia, he has conducted the series of
concerts entitled “Eastman Presents” featuring solists such as Renee Fleming, Itzhak Perlman
and Peter Serkin. He was the featured conductor when the Orchestra journeyed to New York
City in November 2016 to present a new work by the American Composer Kevin Puts, sung by
Renee Fleming at Lincoln Center in New York City.

Most recently he conducted the UBC opera in conjuction with the Vancouver opera orchestra in a production of Mozart’s Magic Flute at the Chan Center. He also conducted at the College
Conservatory of Cincinnati, as well as performing with the Southwestphalen Philharmonic in
Siegen Germany.
