L’invitation au voyage is a solo vocal recital by critically acclaimed rising star baritone Zhou Zhengzhong, lauded by famous tenor Carlo Bergonzi as a “Master of Verdi” and conductor Sir Antonio Pappano as having an exquisite tonality and perfect cantabile. Featuring a selection of operatic arias and art and folks songs, including music by Duparc, Verdi and Puccini, this concert follows his highly-praised last appearance here in the principal role of Marcello in the Singapore Symphony Orchestra’s sold-out semi-staging of Puccini’s La Bohème last year.
Winner of the International Opera Singing Competition of Marmande, Zhou has performed in opera houses internationally, including the Royal Opera Covent Garden in London, Deutsche Oper Berlin, Beijing NCPA, Theatro Municipal de São Paulo, Teatro Municipal de Santiago, Opéra de Monte-Carlo, and Théâtre du Capitole de Toulouse, and in recitals in Avignon, Marseilles, Toulon and Paris.
In renowned classical music critic Hugh Canning’s commentary on Zhou’s performance in Faust, he characterised Zhou as the undisputed best interpreter of the character Valentine he has ever encountered, whether in terms of his image, voice, diction, language handling or musical performance. Chilean newspaper El Mercurio lauded him for his “melodious voice and convincing performance”.
