ROYAL ALBATROSS GUIDED TOUR
Nestled in her protected berth at Resorts World Sentosa, Sentosa Island, Singapore is the Royal Albatross; a traditional class A tall ship that has been transformed into a luxury superyacht. In partnership with Sentosa, the ship is open during the day for tours around this stunning vessel. Today, guests upon entering the berth can be escorted in small groups by knowledgeable tour guides around all 3 decks and are given access to great Instaworthy spots at the Flying Seat, Captains Cabin/Grand Salon, Luxurious Owners Cabin for that once in a lifetime photo onboard this unique vessel. With a rich history within itself, the Royal Albatross will prove to have something of interest for everyone, whether it is for the shutterbugs, the alcohol enthusiast, or the sailing hobbyists and travellers alike. Starting off her journey in Chicago as Windy II, her crew undertook a monumental task of transforming to create a harmonious marriage between the traditional golden age of sailing and the modern technological advances, while maintaining her lode world charm and grace. Master rigger, Jim Barry, best known for his work on the ships featured in the Pirates of the Caribbean movies, redesigned her 22 sail rig that is operated by over 200 ropes, each having a special place on their pin rail around the deck. With less than 100 working tall ship left in the world, the Royal Albatross has the sole distinction of being made for opulence and enjoyment. Its three decks feature a grand salon, cabins, bars and a galley. With a state-of-the-art systems and mood lightings throughout, this superyacht makes for an elegant and unique venue to host guests and clients for private and corporate events and weddings. ROYAL ALBATROSS MAST CLIMB
Experience one of the more challenging aspects of a sailor's life and climb the mast 21 metres above the decks of the Royal Albatross. Be it to prepare the sails or to do repairs; mast climbing has been an essential part of tall ship sailing since time immemorial. Sailors would also clamber up to the crows nest to watch for land or other ships or approaching storms. This traditional tall ship boasts four masts that tower high above the waters of Sentosa. They support 22 sails all manually operated by 200+ ropes, just like they were from a bygone era. The Mast Climb is suitable for adults and children over 7 years old that are physically fit and looking to do something excitingly different! Great for that once-in-a-lifetime video/photo on top of a historic tall ship, an exhilarating activity for you at Resorts World Sentosa. How these seamen used to do it in the olden days is using a harness or a bosun's chair together with a halyard and a winch to be hoisted up to the top. The other way is to secure themselves with a harness and climb up the sailing rig to reach the masthead. Before ascenders came into the picture for traditional climbing, the ship's crew would have to tie friction knots for the same function of securing them. How friction knots work is that they allow the climber to ascend as long as the rope is slack. However, when pressure is applied, by pulling or if the climber falls, the knot will tighten and stop the climber from falling all the way through. Nowadays, technology allows for motorised winches that could even allow for a solo climb, without the need to rely on a belayer. For Royal Albatross, there is an industry attachment for students from the Institute of Technical Education to learn the ropes (literally) in being part of the crew on a tall ship. Part of this course includes learning the different aspects of the vessel and learning how to raise which sails and when. Now, visitors to Sentosa get to take up this challenge to reach greater heights and reach 21 metres above sea level as they look upon the view beneath them. A reward for conquering a different trial unlike any other in the region. If you are an explorer looking for adventure, a thrill-seeker, or maybe someone seeking to overcome their fear of heights, this is the activity for you waiting at Resorts World Sentosa. Experience a remarkable collision of dance, visual installation and live electronic music with xhe (pronounced like “j’y” in French). This immersive performance envelops the audience in search for an elusive figure that is not “he”, not “she”, nor “it”. Instead, xhe could be the pronoun for the possible and the multiple, moving between a square and an octopus.Conceived by Daniel Kok and Miho Shimizu, xhe is a multidisciplinary performance that brings together an international ensemble of artists, including dance artist Karol Tymiński and electronic music duo Filastine and Nova, whose sounds combine beat production with dense layers of voice, analogue synths and strings.Within a kaleidoscope of shifting patterns, moving objects, syncretic sounds, uncanny forms and enchanting moments, the artists will create a shared space of imagination and collective daydream to summon, receive, discover, and even become xhe.The durational performance lasts five hours. It is suitable for all age groups, or people who enjoy imaginative play and embodying diverse perspectives. The audience is invited to arrive at any point during the performance, and is advised to stay for at least 90 minutes to enjoy the full range of xhe’s unfolding surprises.Co-commissioned by Esplanade – Theatres on the Bay and Performance Space with the Naomi Milgrom Foundation (Australia)Supported by the National Arts Council (Singapore), The Japan Foundation Asia Center and Kinosaki International Arts Center (Japan)About the Artists:Daniel Kok is a recipient of the Young Artist Award from National Arts Council. He is also the artistic director of Dance Nucleus.Miho Shimizu studied at Goldsmiths College (London), Oslo National Academy of The Arts, and Piet Swart Institute, Rotterdam. “This recording of Steve Reich’s percussion epic is thunderously exciting, thrusting us into the action.”– The Times, Mar 2018"Colin Currie Group's own recording, honed through long performance practice, brings you into a magic circle where every impact is precisely heard, every overtone burnished."– BBC Music Magazine, Jun 2018"An alluring blend of sonorities…The percussionists and the wordless voices of Synergy Vocals alike come across with a vivid presence."– Financial Times, Apr 2018"The Colin Currie Group’s performance is nothing short of a powerhouse...a visceral thrill: epic, cathartic, and (perhaps especially for pure percussion music) profoundly touching"– Arts Fuse, Apr 2018"A Drumming for this decade – and probably a few to come, too."– Editor's Choice, Gramophone, Apr 2018Hailed by Steve Reich as “one of the greatest musicians in the world today” (Herald Scotland), the Colin Currie Group, together with Synergy Vocals, bring their “thunderously exciting” (The Times) version of Steve Reich’s seminal work Drumming to Singapore in their first-ever live performance in Southeast Asia.Colin Currie Group is a virtuosic ensemble that specialises in the music of Steve Reich. Their performances of Reich’s music have been hailed by the composer as “the best I’ve ever heard” (Tehillim, Tokyo 2017).Led by Colin Currie (“the world’s finest and most daring percussionist” – Spectator), the handpicked group was formed in 2006 for a performance of Drumming at the BBC Proms to celebrate the 70th birthday of Steve Reich. Since then, they have expanded their repertoire to include many of Reich’s most popular works, including Music for 18 Musicians, Tehillim and Music for Pieces of Wood and are privileged to have the frequent presence of the composer when rehearsing and performing these works. The group’s highly anticipated recording of Drumming was released on Colin Currie Records in Spring 2018 after a successful Kickstarter campaign to raise funds, fully supported by Steve Reich who said “it will be, I am sure, the best recording of Drumming ever made”.The Colin Currie Group has appeared in concert at major halls and festivals worldwide, having made their international debut at Tokyo Opera City Concert Hall in 2012 and their European debut at the Concertgebouw, Amsterdam. Doa Buat Kekasih Concert
There are not many artistes able to bridge generations with their craft.Amongst this small but revered group of artistes, Ramli Sarip is the self-deprecating icon of several generations of music lovers. His fans span races and religions, from Malaysia to Brunei and Singapore to Indonesia. The boy from the kampong who claims humbly to “have very little talent” has grown to become the rocking Datuk. His gravelly voice is emotionally loaded whether he is singing about life lessons, divine providence or about aspects of love. The universality of his song has endeared him to various segments of society, to whom he is fondly known as Papa Rock.In nearly half-a-century in the music industry, Ramli has written and performed songs that explore life and living, evolving his craft along the way. From hard rock, his music may have mellowed as he finds himself walking in step with a greater cause. But while the melodies may be gentler, the messages, like his resolve, are still deeply meaningful.Since his time with Sweet Charity, the hard-rocking band he formed, playing in small gigs before hitting the larger circuits, and then rising to prominence as a solo artist, Ramli has constantly employed a work ethic that promoted the whole rather than the one. This is evident in his concerts, where he fills halls and allows a variety of musicians and styles to support his music, while allowing the individual to shine in their own right. His affable demeanour and willingness to chat over a teh tarik and a curry puff helps to cut across barriers. This approach is particularly helpful when it comes to collaborations with other artistes, which is also key to Ramli’s willingness to explore new facets of music. While many have enjoyed his duets with Ella, Datuk M. Nasir, and Dato’ Sri Siti Nurhaliza, there is one song that has endeared and endured.Doa Buat Kekasih, performed originally with Khadijah Ibrahim in 1988 has been reinterpreted numerous times in the last 30 years. It’s a tribute to the song’s central theme — Pray For Love — that people are constantly looking to connect with each other, and love is a strong bond for humanity. The song about breaking up but retaining friendship is particularly poignant in this day and age of fleeting connections. It obviously resonates with audiences, and is a sing-along favourite at his concerts.Doa Buat Kekasih came to be during the ’80s era of power ballads, in particular the Joe Cocker and Jennifer Warnes hit Up Where We Belong. In the upcoming Doa Buat Kekasih 30th Anniversary Tour, the song takes on a new perspective. Proceeds form the concert are being donated to Ain Society, a charity that raises funds for cancer patients. While supporting a noble cause, Doa Buat Kekasih is also presenting the opportunity for fans to see the original stars come together after many years to show how friendships and love can transcend time and generations.
