Are You There Singapore? Written B...
As the opening show of our 75th Anniversary season, The Stage Club presents Are You There Singapore? by Robert Yeo from 5 - 8 February 2020.Considered one of Singapore's first political English language plays, Are You There Singapore? follows the path of a group of university students in London navigating young adulthood in all its messy, heightened glory. As they struggle with political, social and sexual awakening at the cusp of Singapore's independence in the midst of a rapidly changing world, we soon learn that the world we live in today isn't that different from the past.
Berak by Teater Ekamatra
Berak chronicles the aftermath of a suicide: A grandmother bargains with divine powers to release her son's soul from hell. Failing which, she brings him home; she takes over the reins of bringing up her granddaughter, while keeping her daughter-in-law at bay, saving the granddaughter all for herself. She tries to instill in her granddaughter that death is merely a joke, that there's nothing to cry about as she takes her on a mind trip towards the underworld and purgatory. These personal fantasies of the afterlife are challenged however when her granddaughter contracts a terminal illness. The never-ending days of mourning are brought to lurid 3-dimensional, high-definition life as the agonizing wait for the ultimate redemption is an imprisonment in the realm between living and non-living on earth. Berak is a transcreation of Poop, originally written by Chong Tze Chien and produced by The Finger Players. Adapted by Zulfadli Rashid, Written by Chong Tze Chien, Directed by Mohd Fared Jainal. Performed by: Aidli Alin Mosbit, Fir Rahman, Siti Hajar Abdul Gani, Siti Khalijah Zainal

Exile or Pursuit《放逐与追逐》
First Fleet 第一舰队
They are not just convicts of the colony, they are to be citizens of the new world.Nine Years Theatre and Singapore Chinese Cultural Centre jointly present to you First Fleet. Audience will be seated in the same space with the actors, along an outline of a “ship” as the ship sets sail to explore the relationships between theatre and humanity. The year is 1787. The First Fleet of the British Empire sets sail for Australia with a group of convicts aboard, to establish a penal colony. Along the way, the Governor instructs one of his lieutenants to rehearse a play with the convicts, with the hope of using the power of theatre to rehabilitate them. But who has ever heard of an officer putting up a play with his convicts? Certainly not the other officers, priest, judge, doctor or the convicts, who all have reservations about such a ridiculous proposition. Will they eventually be able to stage the play successfully? For these officers and convicts, is the foreign land that they are attempting to build a penal colony in, a brave new world or simply a nightmare from hell?*First Fleet is inspired by Thomas Keneally’s novel The Playmaker and other materials on the convict transportation to Australia.

Huayi 华艺节 2020 7 Sages of the Bamb...
This is a surveillance state. The Organisation reigns supreme over the governance of the known world. Led by Cao Shuang, it controls the basic free will of all men using technology as its weapon—impelling everyone to wear a specially-programmed headset that instructs, controls and eavesdrops. A new law is implemented, forbidding artistic endeavours like music, entertainment, poetry or prose. Acts of disobedience lead to immediate arrest, imprisonment without trial, or worse—execution.Everyone obeys, with the exception of The Organisation’s arch-nemeses, seven revolutionaries who are artists by nature — Ji Kang, Ruan Ji, Shan Tao, Xiang Xiu, Liu Ling, Ruan Xian and Wang Rong. Placated neither by the lure of wealth nor the promise of power, their resistance soon captures the attention of their cagey government. Under the watchful eyes of The Organisation’s Head of Surveillance, Ma Siyi, the painter loses possession of his brush, the poet is prohibited from writing, the dancer no longer moves freely and the musician is forbidden to compose. Unbeknownst to all, Ma is planning to wield absolute control over the entirety of human civilisation through body-implanted microchips. Can the seven break free and liberate mankind from the grasp of The Organisation? In this dystopic era, can they trust each other enough to work together towards a common good?Inspired by the real-life historical figures of the Seven Sages, this new and riveting work traces the artists’ tireless and relentless search for the elusive bamboo grove, an oasis of freedom for humanity. Can the arts ultimately be the force that saves mankind?7 Sages of the Bamboo Grove is an Esplanade commission, directed by Goh Boon Teck, co-written by Goh Boon Teck and Koh Teng Liang, starring Sharon Au, Nelson Chia, Tang Shao Wei and Loh Jun Hong, and presented in conjunction with Toy Factory Productions’ 30th Anniversary celebrations.
