After two years of practical training in all aspects of theatre, Singapore Repertory Theatre's The Young Company will perform 1984 as their graduation show.Based on the iconic novel by George Orwell, 1984 brings us the story of Winston Smith, a cog in the giant machine state of Oceania. Physically and mentally under the omnipresent eye of Big Brother, Winston has been caught struggling for scraps of love and freedom in a world awash with distrust and violence. With the brutal "help" of four Party Members, Winston is forced to confess his Thoughtcrimes before an unseen inquisitor, and the audience -- which acts as a silent witness to his torture. A ferocious and provocative adaptation of one of the most prescient works of literature of the last century.

From these gatherings, it believes that new artistic forms will emerge.Lepage has been acknowledged by Le Monde as “a maestro of today’s multimedia theatre”. He has also been described as “a transformational catalyst as Peter Brook” who “[creates] theatre for people who don’t like theatre”.

M1 Patch! A Theatre Festival of Art...
Play against expectations with this darkly subversive take on a traditional family drama.A dog-like human. A human-like dog.At our bleakest and most desperate, are we human or beast?Everyday, a pair of dog siblings wait to have afternoon tea with their mother. One day, a new family member appears – their supposedly long-lost eldest brother. But no one seems to remember him. Is he simply a lost mongrel, or actually a wild beast in disguise? As the family accepts the stray into their lives, the very foundations of their home begins to crumble. Violence and lust begin to stir in the narrow old apartment…The first prize winner of the 15th Taipei Literature Awards (Play Script category), A Dog’s House is playwright Lin Meng-Huan’s radical take on conventional family plays. Using the metaphor of pets and owners, the play explores intergenerational differences and identities within families, and the ensuing questions on modern society. Through animalized viewpoints, the playwright explores how the self-contradiction and conflicts between family and individual values can lead to devastation, and how we might rebuild from there.Digging deep into the humanity coded within the text, Director Fu Hong-Zheng forges the disintegrating psychological states of each character by shaping the neurotic yet detailed interpretations in the actors’ movement and voice. Derelict and dark on the surface, rich and brutal within, the eccentric, animalistic style serves to realise the deep violence buried within.

SRT Presents Caught
“You’ve read the New Yorker article. You’ve heard all of your artist friends talk about him. Now you can hear Chinese dissident artist Lin Bo speak … about the work that got him jailed back home.” (Los Angeles Times Critics’ Pick)Within a regime that smothers free speech and gives breath to fake news, one voice dared to speak the truth. But, there are two sides to every story; and, when the stakes are survival, who’s to judge what’s fact, and what’s fiction?Anointed by The New Yorker as our generation’s most subversive performance artist, Lin Bo became an international media sensation after his escape from captivity. In honour of his release, SRT commissioned Drama Desk award-winning director Ed Sylvanus Iskandar to create an immersive evening, featuring an exclusively curated art exhibition. Now a fugitive, Lin will travel to Singapore to give a mystery performance, using text created by OBIE award-winner Christopher Chen, which he describes as: “The idea itself is the art.” Enter a labyrinth where reality and fantasy blend into a incisively funny, mind-bending, and compulsively addictive experience where things are not as they first appear.Never stop questioning the truth.Never stop questioning the story. How far down the rabbit hole are you prepared to go? “Part immersive theater, part performance art, part installation, part thrust theater, part food and drinks, and pure play, this exhilarating look into politics, propaganda, and perception is pocked with paradox.” (Stage and Cinema)- Gallery opens 15 mins before event start time.- Enjoy complimentary guided tours and purchase food and drinks upon gallery opening.- Please wear comfortable shoes and note that there is limited parking at the venue.
Shakespeare's Globe 2019
Shakespeare’s Globe presents a trio of plays exploring the themes of refuge and displacement, The Comedy of Errors, Pericles and Twelfth Night. Taking on multiple roles across all three plays, the company will unravel these timeless tales of those who have crossed seas, lost their families, and are finding out what belonging truly means to them.PERICLES - The spirit of fairy tale is never far from the surface of Pericles, the first of Shakespeare’s late romances. Imbued with music, miracles, and the constant presence of the sea, this little-seen work sees Pericles, Prince of Tyre, forced to flee his own kingdom and wander the world.THE COMEDY OF ERRORS - Take one pair of estranged twin brothers (both named Antipholus), and one pair of estranged twin servants (both named Dromio) – both pairs separated at sea. Add a dash of mistaken identity and throw them into a city with a reputation for sorcery, and you have all the ingredients for theatrical chaos…TWELFTH NIGHT - When a shipwreck tears a family apart, twins Sebastian and Viola seek refuge in a new land. Filled with unforgettable characters, Twelfth Night combines cruelty with high comedy and the pangs of unrequited love with subtle poetry, expressed through some of Shakespeare’s most exquisite songs.AUDIENCE CHOICEWhat’s it like to go to the theatre and not know what you’re going to see? Take part in our democratic theatrical experiment to find out. For one performance only, it will be up to you to vote for which of these three plays you want to see: Pericles, Twelfth Night or The Comedy of Errors. The rules are simple: the loudest cheer wins. Actors call it ‘terrifying’, audiences say it’s exhilarating. So scream and shout as loud as you can for the play you want to see, and blow the (figurative) roof off the theatre.
