Curator's Tour (9 Mar 2018)French Connection: Southeast Asian Artists in Paris, 1880s-1960sThis tour begins with the work of early forerunners Raden Saleh and Juan Luna in Between Worlds, and continues in the permanent galleries to uncover other artists who spent time in Paris including Vu Cao Dam and Georgette Chen. Jointly led by Russell Storer (Deputy Director, Curatorial & Collections, National Gallery Singapore), Lisa Horikawa (Senior Curator, National Gallery Singapore) and Phoebe Scott (Curator, National Gallery Singapore).About the curatorsRussell Storer is the Deputy Director of Curatorial & Collections at National Gallery Singapore. He was previously Head of Asian and Pacific Art at the Queensland Art Gallery | Gallery of Modern Art (QAGOMA) in Brisbane, and a curator at the Museum of Contemporary Art, Sydney. Storer has organised solo exhibitions of the work of Cai Guo-Qiang, Simryn Gill, Matthew Ngui, Juan Davila, Paddy Bedford and Ugo Rondinone. He was on the curatorial teams for the 6th, 7th and 8th Asia Pacific Triennials (2009, 2012 and 2015), a co-curator of the 3rd Singapore Biennale (2011), a curatorial comrade for the 2008 Biennale of Sydney, and a visiting curator at documenta 12 (2007). He has written widely on Asian and Australian contemporary art.Horikawa Lisa is a Senior Curator at National Gallery Singapore. An enchanting evening of lyrical Urdu poetry, and discussion with acclaimed poet Javed Akhtar and his wife, renowned actress Shabana AzmiJaved Akhtar, noted Indian script writer, lyricist and poet, and his wife Shabana Azmi, renowned actress and activist come together for a mesmerising evening of lyrical Urdu poetry followed by invigorating conversation on poetry, cinema, the arts and social issues – topics close to their hearts. Javed, an eminent writer who is also a social activist and commentator, will recite a selection of his poetry in Urdu while Shabana complements his recitation with translations of the poems into English.The two hail from well-known Indian families distinguished in the arts. Javed continues a family lineage of Urdu writers spanning seven generations. Shabana is the daughter of Kaifi Azmi, considered to be one the greatest Urdu poets of 20th century, and her mother Shaukat Kaifi a well-known stage actress. Both have the distinct honour of being given the National Award five times in their respective fields with three of them in a row - an unparalleled achievement.
