Give it to me. Give all your heart to me.An exciting fusion of Western operatic style and Peking Opera elements, Painted Skin – An Opera in Concert is an ambitious adaptation of the classic Chinese short story from Strange Tales from a Chinese Studio by Pu Songling. Presented as an opera in concert, a dramatic narrative unfolds, revealing an inner world of greed, lust and hypocrisy concealed under the glamorous veneers that humans wear.A Chinese scholar chances upon a beautiful woman crying in the rain while on his way home. He gives her an umbrella out of kindness, unaware that she is actually a demon in disguise, wearing a mask made of human skin painted with beautiful features. Besotted with the scholar, the demon charms him. A romantic relationship ensues but eventually results in tragedy.A co-commission by Esplanade – Theatres on the Bay, China Shanghai International Arts Festival, the Singapore Chinese Orchestra, and produced by Major Performing Arts Group, Painted Skin is an innovative and creative musical interpretation of a classic tale. The production sees the acclaimed Singapore Chinese Orchestra collaborating with a creative team comprising scriptwriter Wang Yuanfei, renowned composer Hao Weiya, pioneering director Yi Liming, under the baton of maestro Tsung Yeh.Coupled with live multimedia projections and contemporary theatrical elements, mezzo-soprano Dong Fang, soprano Li Jing Jing and Peking Opera actor Liu Zheng, accompanied by an ensemble of leading musicians from Singapore Chinese Orchestra. The hearts of humans,Are they crimson, or are they black?Co-Commissioned by Esplanade – Theatres on the Bay, China Shanghai International Arts Festival, Singapore Chinese Orchestra, and produced by Major Performing Arts Group.

PEKKA KUUSISTO, violinNICHOLAS COLLON, conductorPROGRAMMEBEETHOVENString Quartet No.8, Op. 59II. Molto adagio (Si tratta questo pezzo con molto di sentimento)MAX RICHTERNew Work (World Premiere)ADÈSViolin Concerto, ‘Concentric Paths’MOZARTSymphony No. 41 in C major, K551 (From Memory)ABOUT THE EVENTIn this concert, the Aurora Orchestra explores celestial sounds and the cosmic order in an eclectic programme enriched by choreography and illustration. For the Greek philosophers and their later admirers in the Renaissance, music was of profound importance, woven into the fabric of the cosmos as elemental sounds produced by the stars and planets themselves. This enduring concept of the ‘music of the spheres’ provides the starting point for what promises to be one of Aurora's most visually spectacular Orchestral Theatre adventures, with elements of design, lighting, projection and illustration placing the orchestra inside these ancient visions of our solar system. At the heart of the concert is a memorised performance of Mozart’s ‘Jupiter’ Symphony, the composer’s final and arguably greatest single musical achievement. This most perfectly-crafted expression of symphonic form is presented here entirely from memory: a thrillingly direct and communicative performance style pioneered by the Aurora Orchestra in recent seasons as the first orchestra in history to play whole symphonies without the aid of sheet music. The programme also includes the world premiere of a new work by Max Richter created especially for this project, and Thomas Adès’ Violin Concerto ‘Concentric Paths’, a soaring modern masterpiece performed by Pekka Kuusisto – one of the brightest stars in today’s musical firmament.Photo credit: Nick Rutter
