Sibelius Complete Symphonies II: Sy...
The Philharmonic Orchestra presents part two of the Sibelius Symphony Cycle, showcasing both the familiar and unfamiliar aspects of his symphonic language. Symphony 4 is coupled with Symphony 2 to bring vastly contrasting moods and undertones into sharp relief. The bright Second had sources of inspiration from Italy and the Mediterranean, and perhaps even from a new friendship. Axel Carpelan, the work's dedicatee, came to describe the symphony as a work 'with sunshine and blue, blue sky and jubilant happiness'. 120 years on, it is the most well-loved and oft-performed symphony by Sibelius. The introspective Fourth however was born of the Finnish composer's deep dissatisfaction for "empty grandiloquence and empty materialism". Despite bewildering and challenging audiences both past and present, Sibelius was defiantly proud to have written this work - one that gave him great strength and satisfaction. The TENG Ensemble Presents Heirlo...
In 2016, The TENG Ensemble began a research process into the music of Singapore’s early Chinese migrants. Interviewing, documenting and learning from a community of first-generation masters, luthiers, instrument dealers and protégés from the local Cantonese, Hokkien, Teochew and Hakka music traditions, Heirlooms marks the performance highlight of a project that has been four years in the making.Through modern reinterpretations of our diverse dialect music traditions, the concert will premiere a repertoire of eight commissioned works and will feature instruments found only in these folk ensembles. In Heirlooms, The TENG Ensemble will celebrate our unsung musical pioneers and reimagine the sounds that were carried in the hearts of our Chinese forefathers. This concert is organised in support of the Singapore Bicentennial. The TENG Company and The Forefathers Project are proudly supported by Mapletree Investments.

One of the world’s most exciting contemporary chamber ensembles, the much-lauded Pavel Haas Quartet is named after the Czech composer Pavel Haas (1899–1944). The concert ends with the titanic Op. 130 Quartet by Beethoven, one of his final works.
