Messiah is an English-language oratorio composed by German-born English composer George Frideric Handel (1685-1759) in 1741 and it remains his best-known work. Handel worked on it with his friend and collaborator Charles Jennen. It was the latter's idea that the underlying theme of "Messiah" was to be built upon a series of scriptural verses. The text was drawn from three parts of the Bible: The Old Testament prophesying the birth of the Messiah; New Testament text on the birth of Christ, his death and his resurrection; and verses relating to Judgement Day, with the final chorus text drawn from the Book of Revelation.Hallelujah Oratorio Society (HOS) celebrates its 40th anniversary by performing this oratorio with the Jakarta Festival Chorus and Gloria Dei Cantores under the direction of HOS music director Lee Chong Min, accompanied by The Philharmonic Orchestra, along with four soloists: Colette Lam (soprano), Chia Wee Kiat (countertenor), Solomon Chong (tenor) and Caleb Woo (bass).
