Rasputin
Synopsis

Witness ballet superstar Sergei Polunin in Singapore for the first time to perform his career-defining role of Grigori Rasputin in the sophisticated dance drama.

Polunin's performance of one of the most enigmatic figures in Russian history is not to be missed.

"Polunin is Rasputin, a titanic, totemic performance, revealing many facets of this controversial figure. Rasputin is a role for which he was destined.” ★★★★ Bachtrack

A youthful prodigy, Polunin became the London Royal Ballet’s youngest-ever male principal dancer at the age of just 21. But only two years later, he shocked the ballet world with his sudden decision to quit the company. He swiftly re-emerged in Russia, dancing with the Stanislavsky Music Theatre, and has gone on to develop a parallel career as an actor, appearing in films like Murder on the Orient Express. He has also reached a new audience on YouTube through the viral video Take Me To Church.

Polunin stars in this dance drama exploring the ambivalence between power and weakness, good and evil. Rasputin explores the title character’s complex psychology and moral ambivalence, and his catastrophic effect on the Russian court on a set modelled on a chessboard.

Royal Seats and Boxes include an exclusive post-show meet and greet with Sergei Polunin.

Since his rise through the ranks of ballet - becoming London Royal Ballet’s youngest-ever male principal dancer at the age of just 21 - Sergei Polunin has danced with distinguished companies in both London and Moscow.

But only two years later, the Ukranian dancer shocked the ballet world with his sudden decision to quit the company. He swiftly re-emerged in Russia, dancing with the Stanislavsky Music Theatre. Sergei has since sought to expand into the realm of acting and other creative endeavours.

He was first shown in the international spotlight in the role of Slavemaster/Sheppard in the 25th Anniversary The Phantom of the Opera at the Royal Albert Hall. He made his on-screen acting debut in Kenneth Branagh’s Murder on the Orient Express, followed by Francis Lawrence’s Red Sparrow alongside Jennifer Lawrence and Joel Edgerton. He recently starred alongside American prima ballerina Misty Copeland in Disney’s live-action film The Nutcracker and the Four Realms.

Sergei’s viral Take Me To Church video, directed by David LaChapelle and set to the music of Hozier, has now amassed over 26 million views and his story was made the subject of the documentary feature film Dancer.

Ballet Credits:
Dances at a Gathering and Rhapsody, Solor and Bronze Idol (La Bayadere), Des Grieux (Manon), the Prince (The Nutcracker), (Cinderella), (Sleeping beauty), (Giselle) and Lensky (Onegin). For the Stanislavsky Ballet in Moscow, Sergei’s roles include; Prince Siegfried (Swan Lake), Albrecht (Giselle), Frantz (Coppelia), Basil (Don Quixote), Solor and Crown Prince Rudolf (Mayerling).

Sergei was premier dancer of Royal Opera House (London, UK), Mariinsky and Bolshoy Theatre (Russia). Then, by invitation of Igor Zelensky, he has also worked with Stanislavsky Theatre (Moscow) and State Ballet Theatre of Novosibirsk and Munich State Opera Theatre (Germany).

Film Credits:
Murder on the Orient Express (2017), Red Sparrow (2018), The White Crow (2018), The Nutcracker and the Four Realms (2018).

Other work:
Sergei has recently opened the ‘Sergei Polunin Foundation’; a charitable body dedicated to finding young and under-privileged individuals and providing them access to a professional dance education and to encourage and develop creativity. The mission of the foundation is to expand ballet and dance to a wider audience, whilst honouring traditional ballet and combining it with the most cutting-edge approach.
