Figure8 Agency Presents Tinariwen...
Figure8 Agency, in collaboration with Esplanade – Theatres on the Bay, is thrilled to present the Tuareg Grammy-winning sensation Tinariwen in Singapore! Tinariwen is an iconic desert blues band originally from northern Mali, a country which has given the world Toumani Diabaté and the great Ali Farka Touré, among others. Rooted in traditional Tuareg music but influenced by the likes of Bob Dylan, Jimi Hendrix and Bob Marley, their music addresses political awakening, problems of exile, repression, and sovereignty. The band has become a rallying point for the disenfranchised nation, while helping to garner global interest in desert blues, a hypnotic and danceable combination of blues, Tuareg folk, rock and more. Outlawed in Algeria and Mali, their first two albums found an international audience, and paved the way for a wave of Tuareg desert blues artists such as Bombino and Tamikrest. Their praises have been sung by some of the planet’s most influential musicians—Thom Yorke, Damon Albarn, Robert Plant and Chris Martin, to name just a few.Elwan was recorded between Morocco and Joshua Tree, California, with special guests Mark Lanegan (Screaming Trees, Queens of the Stone Age), Kurt Vile and Matt Sweeney (Johnny Cash, Bonnie Prince Billy and Cat Power). This record reaffirms this Tuareg institution as one of the most legendary and influential African bands in recent decades. Elwan has been nominated for Best World Music Album at the 2018 Grammy Awards

In Copland’s Lincoln Portrait, hear the speeches of Abraham Lincoln recited by acclaimed stage actor Benjamin Chow, who received rave reviews for his role as the ambitious Prince Tun in The Forbidden City (2017) and was awarded Best Supporting Actor at The Straits Times Life Theatre Awards in 2016.Completing the programme are Bernstein's Slava!, a rousing overture written for conductor Mstislav Rostropovich for the conductor's first season with the National Symphony Orchestra, and music from four movements of Copland's ballet Rodeo, namely Buckaroo Holiday, Corral Nocturne, Saturday Night Waltz and Hoe-Down!

TPCC Presents: Skywalk
“I see a visionof divinity, God’s Earth, the scars of national boundaries gone!”— Stevan KeaneThroughout history, spiritual and sacred texts have described events where earthly beings attain divinity, and where deities exhibit the very essence of humanity. In this concert titled Skywalk, The Philharmonic Chamber Choir recollects exquisite moments through a diverse selection of works which illustrate how the divine and the mortal intertwine.Witness the conflicts and resolutions of the soul in Hugo Wolf’s Sechs geistliche Lieder, and the austere retelling of a well-known biblical story in Arvo Pärt’s The Woman with the Alabaster Box. Experience the deep invocation of the Holy Spirit in Krzystof Penderecki’s Veni Creator, and the stark yet calming diatonicism of Ton de Leeuw’s Prière. Celebrate both earthly and heavenly wonder through an African-inspired Magnificat by Giles Swayne, and the Southeast Asian premiere of Magnificat from a Garden in the Antipodes by New Zealander composer Janet Jennings. Finally, partake in a sense of otherworldliness by gazing upon the earth with Steve Martland’s Skywalk, so that you too may perceive transcendence in your very own Skywalk. With the support of Creative New Zealand Toi Aotearoa
