Experimental Cantonese Opera "Farew...
Presented and Produced by West Kowloon Cultural District Xiqu CentreAbout the plotIn the bleak cold of autumn in Gaixia, Xiang Yu, the self-proclaimed “Overlord of Western Chu”, realises he faces defeat.Echoing from all sides, the songs of Western Chu and the whinnying of war horses add to the heavy-hearted mood pointing to his downfall. Under the moonlight, Xiang Yu’s lover, Consort Yu, bids a heartbreaking farewell to her hero before committing suicide with his sword. By the banks of the Wu River, Xiang hears Yu’s voice encouraging him to bide his time and wait to regain power, and sees the spirits of soldiers slain in battle appear before him, urging him to fight till the end.Blending traditional Cantonese opera techniques with contemporary staging and lighting design, this groundbreaking production reinterprets the last moments of a hero caught between reality and illusion before his final battle and ultimate defeat at Gaixia.Creative ideasThis new adaptation of the classic play Farewell My Concubine, merges traditional Cantonese opera principles with innovative new techniques, offering audiences a performance that illustrates the transformation and development of Cantonese opera. The play opens with a prelude that features the entry of the heroic male lead Xiang Yu and a demonstration of traditional Cantonese opera performing skills. Throughout the production, songs are sung in Central Plains Mandarin and Cantonese, with tunes played by a traditional Cantonese opera luo gu (gongs and drums) ensemble. When Xiang takes a farewell drink with his concubine, the performers adopt contemporary bangzi and erhuang singing styles singing to xiaoqu (folk music) in traditional Central Plains Mandarin, and in the final scenes, the depiction of Xiang Yu’s psychological complexity is enhanced by the introduction of contemporary melodies.Respecting tradition and artistic innovation, our aim is to create vibrant productions that transcend traditional frameworks and explore new and original works, taking inspiration and elements from other performing art forms, and forging a new direction for Cantonese opera with an experimental and youthful approach.Artistic TeamProducer: Naomi Chung*Playwright/ Director/ Music Arranger: Keith Lai, Janet WongActors: Keith Lai, Janet Wong, Ng Lap HeiEnsemble Leader: Lee Tik LunPercussion Ensemble Leader: Dai RihuiTechnical Director: Rae Wu** WKCDA Staff

The carnatic faculty of SIFAS pays tribute to three distinguished vaggeyakaras (singer-composers), Arunagirinathar, Syama Sastri and Harikesanellur Muthiah Bhagavatar, who represent the pre-trinity, trinity and post-trinity eras of the South Indian medieval classical music, respectively.Arunagirinathar, a 15th century pre-trinity Tamil poet, contributed largely to chanda talas, a unique system of South Indian Tamil music, by creating poems called tiruppugazh which praises Lord Murugan. The eldest among the trinity of carnatic music was Syama Sastri, whose contribution to the intricate laya (rhythm) system and rakthi raga compositions stands as a testimony to his remarkable stature as a prominent composer. In the post-trinity period, one could consider 20th century composer Muthiah Bhagavatar as a colossal contributor to carnatic. He had to his credit, the innovation of 20 new ragas and a hundreds of compositions.Carnatic Composers is a series of concerts that explore the rich diversity of carnatic music through the works of composers who have defined the genre from the 15th century to the present.

Master rigger, Jim Barry, best known for his work on the ships featured in the Pirates of the Caribbean movies, redesigned her 22 sail rig that is operated by over 200 ropes, each having a special place on their pin rail around the deck. With less than 100 working tall ship left in the world, the Royal Albatross has the sole distinction of being made for opulence and enjoyment. ROYAL ALBATROSS MAST CLIMB
Experience one of the more challenging aspects of a sailor's life and climb the mast 21 metres above the decks of the Royal Albatross. Be it to prepare the sails or to do repairs; mast climbing has been an essential part of tall ship sailing since time immemorial. Sailors would also clamber up to the crows nest to watch for land or other ships or approaching storms. This traditional tall ship boasts four masts that tower high above the waters of Sentosa. They support 22 sails all manually operated by 200+ ropes, just like they were from a bygone era. The Mast Climb is suitable for adults and children over 7 years old that are physically fit and looking to do something excitingly different! Great for that once-in-a-lifetime video/photo on top of a historic tall ship, an exhilarating activity for you at Resorts World Sentosa. How these seamen used to do it in the olden days is using a harness or a bosun's chair together with a halyard and a winch to be hoisted up to the top. The other way is to secure themselves with a harness and climb up the sailing rig to reach the masthead. Before ascenders came into the picture for traditional climbing, the ship's crew would have to tie friction knots for the same function of securing them. How friction knots work is that they allow the climber to ascend as long as the rope is slack. However, when pressure is applied, by pulling or if the climber falls, the knot will tighten and stop the climber from falling all the way through. Nowadays, technology allows for motorised winches that could even allow for a solo climb, without the need to rely on a belayer. For Royal Albatross, there is an industry attachment for students from the Institute of Technical Education to learn the ropes (literally) in being part of the crew on a tall ship. Part of this course includes learning the different aspects of the vessel and learning how to raise which sails and when. Now, visitors to Sentosa get to take up this challenge to reach greater heights and reach 21 metres above sea level as they look upon the view beneath them. A reward for conquering a different trial unlike any other in the region. If you are an explorer looking for adventure, a thrill-seeker, or maybe someone seeking to overcome their fear of heights, this is the activity for you waiting at Resorts World Sentosa. Shakespeare’s Globe returns to Singapore with three of the playwright’s most popular plays - Twelfth Night, The Merchant of Venice and The Taming of the Shrew. How did a company tour in Shakespeare’s day? We know that when the theatres closed, a small group of actors, juggling a variety of roles in three or four plays from their extensive repertoire, would leave London and head off on tour. We also know that the choice of play or entertainment was left to the most powerful person of the household.Cast your vote! So, following in the tradition of our resident playwright, a company of eight actors will offer audiences a choice of three plays. And also in keeping with tradition – and with thrilling unpredictability – the choice of play will be put back into the hands of the most powerful members of the house: the audience.Follow in the tradition of a Shakespearean audience and get involved, raise your hands and shout out loud to cast your vote for your favourite play!Join us this September to watch one of the three plays on a specific date, or attend one of the Audience Choice shows, where you – the audience- will choose the play just before the performance is set to begin. The Merchant of Venice - In Venice, the epicentre of consumption, speculation and debt, Bassanio borrows money from his friend Antonio to finance his attempt to win the hand of Portia, a wealthy heiress.Twelfth Night - In the household of the Countess Olivia, two campaigns are being quietly waged - one by the lovesick Duke Orsino against the heart of the indifferent Olivia; the other by an alliance of servants and hangers-on against the high-handedness of her steward, the pompous Malvolio. The Taming of the Shrew - Two wealthy sisters in Padua must be married off. The modest, demure Bianca has no shortage of suitors, but who on earth will take the wild, ungovernable, ‘shrewish’ Kate?
