28th Singapore International Film F...
The Singapore International Film Festival (SGIFF) is delighted to open its 28th edition with Angels Wear White, a femme-centric thriller by Chinese director, Vivian Qu. The film's narrative is anchored through the perspectives of Mia, the sole witness to a sexual assault; and Wen, a victim who finds no respite from a mother plunged into shameful despair. Director Vivian Qu's reflection on the precarious existence of a young female in rural China is remarkable in its objective realism and offers a complex image of youths coming of age through disillusionment. The film stars Vicky Chen (Best Leading Actress Nominee for 54th Golden Horse Awards), teenage actress-singer Zhou Meijun, and veteran Chinese actress, Shi Ke and actor, Geng Le. The Special Presentation section is a gala showcase of some of the most talked about and anticipated new films from today's leading and up-and-coming filmmakers: Directed by Anup Singh, The Song of Scorpions is a twisted tale of love between a camel trader and a mystical singer played out amidst the breathtaking scenery in the deserts of Rajasthan. Get ready for a visual spectacle lensed by Swiss cinematographers Pietro Zuercher and Carlotta Holy-Steinemann who chose to highlight the barren sandy landscapes in luscious earthy hues. The strength of the film however lies in the chemistry between the two leads - the charismatic Irrfan Khan, and the radiant Golshifteh Farahani - both award winners in their own right. Featuring songs by renowned Indian composer and lyricist Madan Gopal Singh, the film will mesmerize you with its blend of mythology, folk legend and the fervor of love, revenge and loss. In this debut feature film, Oh Lucy!, Director Atsuko Hirayanagi expands on her critically-acclaimed 2014 short which premiered at Cannes Critics Week. Aided by a fine cast - Shinobu Terajima as the earnest trainwreck Setsuko/Lucy, Kaho Minami as the sharp-tongued Mika, and Josh Hartnett as the affable John, the strength of the film lies in its quirky humour and underlying sardonic wit. With just the right winning formula of combining culture clash and family dramedy, Oh Lucy! is a lighthearted, enjoyable affair with a dash of darkness - an exploration into an older woman's loneliness and desire to be loved by both her family and the men she encounters in her life. “… Agam’s musical oeuvre also included some expansive alapanas, swara-play and languidly-paced ghazals. All fitted amazingly into the East-West sonic blend.” - The HinduTake the sounds of Dream Theater, Rush and Iron Maiden, mix them with the musical idioms of carnatic music, and what you get is a scintillating contemporary sound that appeals to the young and old alike. That’s the music of Agam, a group of carnatic rockers part of the new generation of musicians who are reinventing the classical experience. This November, the multiple award-winning band returns to Esplanade with their first full-length concert outside of India.Derived from an ancient Tamil word, the name Agam means “inner self” and is the group’s creative mantra, so to speak. The Bangalore-based band describes its music as carnatic meets progressive rock, the combination of classical melodic scales and rhythm structures, and western aesthetic principles.Formed in 2003 by a group of former schoolmates, the seven-man outfit got their break in 2007 after winning a national televised band hunt judged by Oscar-winning Indian composer, AR Rahman. Following gigs around South India, Agam went on to perform at high profile music festivals in India, which gained them popularity on a national level.Their debut album, The Inner Self Awakens, was released in 2012 with over 4,000 copies sold, topping the independent album chart on Flipkart. Regular performers at South India’s Hard Rock Café, they have also appeared on television, most notably on MTV’s Coke Studio as a featured producer. The group also collaborates with musicians, including highly-acclaimed playback singer Shreya Ghoshal and Aruna Sairam, to name a few.

“…I spent the entire day on the terrace of a café in a little square watching life pass by; the hustle and bustle, the milling of tourists, natives and workers. And none of the people knew anything of each other...” – Peter Handke, 1992Have you ever watched strangers on the street and wondered what their lives might be like? What are the stories behind their actions and movements? And how might you be connected to them in this great big world? In 1992, experimental Austrian dramatist Peter Handke (Offending the Audience, Wings of Desire) premiered The Hour We Knew Nothing of Each Other, a one-act wordless play about the things that happen in a day at an unspecified town square. The 105-minute piece, which consisted of 450 characters played by 27 actors doing absurd actions and movements, was a phenomelogical exercise in the first-person experience: people-watching.In Raka Maitra’s latest production, the dancer-choreographer takes inspiration from Handke’s landmark work to the railway platform, melding dance and theatre into a series of wordless movements based on everyday gestures, filled with strong imagery and fleeting glimpses of stories.Described by Dance Europe as “without doubt a dancer of the 21st century”, Maitra defies the conventional dichotomy of classical and contemporary with her expansion of new vocabularies and contexts of odissi. A disciple of odissi dancer Madhavi Mudgal, she was awarded the Shringarmani, a national level award for odissi. Several of Maitra’s recent works were inspired by Indian writers and poets.About CHOWK Productions and Raka MaitraFounded in 2007 by Raka Maitra, CHOWK creates artistic productions, engages in research and provides dance classes. Its vision is to be recognised internationally for creating dance that moves and speaks without borders. The company’s artistic productions include full-length contemporary dance works that have been commissioned by local theatres and festivals in Singapore, which have toured internationally. Maitra’s dance language draws from the martial arts and classical Indian dance. From 2007-2011, Maitra was an associate artist with The Substation.

The essence of Advaita is that Divinity is not separated but radiates within the deepest core of our being. All human beings regardless of era, religion, or culture are vessels of this lights of all lights. This divine inner presence gives us awareness, talent and drive. The fountain of our well-being and our own personal spiritual director is this sacred indwelled is revered in the great spiritual traditions as light, love and life itself.
