Can a series of 36 questions make you fall in love with someone you’ve just met?Would you like to be famous? When did you last sing to yourself? To someone else? What is your most terrible memory? In 1977, psychologist Arthur Aron, together with a group of research colleagues, published the article The Experimental Generation of Interpersonal Closeness. Aron had assembled a series of 36 questions that pairs of strangers would ask each other, with questions that are initially dispassionate and playful, culminating with intimate ones. His belief is that by placing strangers in positions of vulnerability and openness, this exercise fosters openness to another person, leading to them falling in love.Four dancers... 36 questions... Kalaa Utsavam - Indian Festival of ...
Adishakti has evolved into a purely physical craft for the stimulation of emotion and psychological expression. As breathing is the physical expression of thought and emotion, it implies that a particular emotion has a particular pattern of breath. In koodiyattam, an ancient form of Sanskrit theatre from Kerala, there existed the knowledge of eight breath patterns that corresponded to specific emotions as mentioned in the Natya Shastra(Sanskrit text on performing arts). It is apparent that this codification emerged from a study of breathing behaviour in everyday life.In this session, participants will learn about the eight patterns of breath corresponding to the eight emotions of koodiyattam, and explore varying degrees of emotions to communicate even the subtleties of heightened emotions. Participants will begin to discover the movement of the facial muscles, the eyes for different emotions and learn how to naturally shape the face with the breath. The workshop is open to actors and those from other disciplines.Wear comfortable outfit for easy bends and stretching.Recommended for ages 18 & aboveFor more details about Kalaa Utsavam 2018, visit www.esplanade.com/kalaautsavam

50 years ago, the visionary writer John Berger and Swiss photographer Jean Mohr published A Fortunate Man, a meditation on the role of a doctor that is still widely read by healthcare practitioners today. The book followed the daily life of English country general practitioner John Sassall, witnessing his compassion as well as his practice as a physician through storytelling and photography.15 years after the book’s publication, John Sassall took his own life. Taking this tragic event as a starting point, New Perspectives teams up with acclaimed theatre maker Michael Pinchbeck to create a stage exploration of the book, interposing it with interviews with medical practitioners today.Part theatre-lecture, part expressionistic explosion of the book, A Fortunate Man is a powerful and poignant interrogation about the passions and pressures of being a doctor in the modern world and what that says about the future health of our society.

In this lecture performance, actress Sharon Frese explores the history and influence of the African diaspora in Singapore. Dredging the archives, she shares images and documents relating to slavery, colonialism, jazz and nationalist struggle, reaffirming the value of black culture as part of our shared heritage. This event is both a history lesson and a theatrical ritual. The creators commemorate the untold numbers of black men and women—enslaved, indentured and expatriate—who crossed the oceans into unknown territory. They draw strength from these tides, which Indian convicts called the “black water”—in Hindi “kala pani”, or in Malay “ayer hitam”.Please note that this venue is not wheelchair accessible. This production is presented with support from Centre 42.
