Huayi 华艺节 2019 Dear John 凯吉一岁 M.O.V.E. Theatre (Taiwan) 动见体(台湾)
“The piano instrument, the spatial installation, the body of the musician, and the body of the dancer altogether created a brand new artistic circuit. This is not a simple piece of interdisciplinary collaboration; this is a project that confronts all existing paradigms and explores new horizons of art.”– Lin Yu Pin, art critic, Taishin Arts Award"When I was introduced to Oskar Fischinger, he began to talk with me about the spirit which is inside each of the objects of this world. So, he told me, all we need to do to liberate that spirit is to brush past the object, and to draw forth its sound…Many years since then, I never stopped touching things, making them sound and resound, to discover what sounds they could produce. Wherever I went, I always listened to objects."– John Cage, 1968 Stop, listen, feel. Can the sounds around you be felt? Can the objects around you be heard?Inspired by the philosophy of avant-garde American musician John Cage, Taiwan’s M.O.V.E. Theatre presents Dear John, an innovative and interdisciplinary production involving dance, lighting effects, technology, audience participation, as well as sound.Dear John depicts a sound journey that begins with a “deconstructed piano” and fully reveals the process of making sound. Redefining the interpretation of performing arts and the physicality of sound, and challenging the power-relation between performers and audiences, the exploratory Dear John was one of the five works that was awarded the 2014 Taishin Arts Awards—the only award in Taiwan that acknowledges creative achievements in works of visual, performing and inter-disciplinary arts. With the performance venue turned into a playful sound lab, this performance piece weaves sound, light and movement to create a unique ambient soundscape that encourages audience members to explore the space, and even become soundmakers themselves, becoming an indispensable and unpredictable part of the experience.

“…this is just me, me the way I write, the way I want to be to you…and you can tear me up and throw me out, or keep me, and read me today, tomorrow, any time you want until you die.”Could the love of your life be just a letter away? Can writing a lifetime’s worth of letters make you fall in love with someone whom you always thought of as just a friend? At age seven, Andrew penned his first letter to Melissa, telling her she looked like a lost princess. She wrote back to tell him to stop writing to her, and he was entranced. For the next 50 years, through hurt and disappointments, triumphs and failures, wars and marriages (to other people), they poured their hearts out to each other in their written exchanges, becoming each other’s closest confidantes.Presented in Singapore for the first time in Mandarin and Cantonese, experience romance the old-fashioned way as Love Letters explores the love and loss shared between a pair of childhood friends. Each heartrending performance features a different pair of actors—Hong Kong theatre practitioners Rensen Chan and Jo Ngai (who last moved audiences at Huayi 2015 with Travel with Mum), as well as Nelson Chia and Mia Chee of Singapore’s Nine Years Theatre.Written in 1988 by American playwright A. R. Gurney, Love Letters was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize for Drama, and has since been restaged countless times and adapted into Mandarin, Urdu and Russian.

Yellow River Cantata by Braddell Heights Symphony Orchestra and The Joy Chorale In Collaboration with Esplanade - Theatres on the Bay
Following the critically acclaimed 2017 Homage concert, Cultural Medallion recipient Tsung Yeh returns to lead the Braddell Heights Symphony Orchestra in Yellow River Cantata, now also in his newly appointed role as the orchestra’s artistic advisor.A celebration of music that will undoubtedly stir the soul in its nationalistic fervour—the centrepiece of the programme will be the Yellow River Cantata by Chinese composer Xian Xinghai. Huayi 华艺节 2019 That Which Cannot Be Divided 无法被整除 Bulareyaung Pagarlava & Albert Tiong (Taiwan/Singapore) 布拉瑞扬·帕格勒法与张咏翔(台湾/新加坡)
Prime numbers—random, unpredictable and aimless. Or are they? That Which Cannot Be Divided is an Esplanade commissioned dance presentation that explores the mystery of prime numbers and their relation to life. Featuring two former members of Taiwan’s distinguished Cloud Gate Dance Theatre—renowned choreographers Bulareyaung Pagarlava from Taiwan and Albert Tiong from Singapore— the dance double-bill showcases two diverse works full of boundless possibilities. At first glance, the distribution of prime numbers may seem aimless and haphazard. However, on closer look, the way prime numbers are distributed could be guided by patterns and structured by theories. Is this a reflection of the world we live in? Amidst chaos, we constantly seek clarity, show resilience, and pursue harmony and contentment. Similarly, in the language of dance, one often finds resolution in chaos.About Bulareyaung PagarlavaBulareyaung Pagarlava is from the Paiwan tribe of Eastern Taiwan. During the last two decades, Bulareyaung has been invited on numerous occasions to choreograph and perform for various contemporary dance companies both in Taiwan and internationally. However, his increasing awareness of his Paiwani identity has led him towards a new path, focusing on his own native heritage and working with talented young dancers to explore the complex notions between voice and movements, creating unique expressions of indigenous contemporary dance. Bulareyaung Dance Company was founded in August 2014.About Albert TiongAlbert Tiong is a well-known Singaporean choreographer and educator in contemporary dance. He has created works and trained generations of dancers for Frontier Danceland, Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts, LASALLE College of the Arts and The People’s Association, and founded the former Re:Dance Theatre. Currently a teacher with NUS Dance Synergy and Singapore Raffles Music College Dance Faculty, he also conducts regular classes with T.H.E Dance Company and T.H.E Second Company. As an independent dance artist, his works have been presented in various countries.

Huayi 华艺节 2019 FOUR FOUR EIGHT 四四八 Emergency Stairs (Singapore) 避难阶段 (新加坡)
“Built to be lonelyto love the absent.Find meFree mefrom thiscorrosive doubtfutile despairhorror in repose.I can fill my spacefill my timebut nothing can fill this void in my heart.”– Sarah Kane, 4.48 PsychosisHow can one survive and love in a broken world? How do we get along with ourselves?Inspired by British playwright Sarah Kane’s last work 4.48 Psychosis, Young Artist Award recipient Liu Xiaoyi presents FOUR FOUR EIGHT, a brand-new work that leads you into a world, a social construct, where every audience member becomes a participant in a space of gathering and camaraderie; in a place of urban loneliness – the bar.Taking place in an actual bar, the perceptions of individual audience members are challenged the moment when one enters the performance environment. Taking in the sights and sounds, each person becomes aware of the presence of self, others, the space, and various activities in the venue. The experience is an individual realisation, and is up to you to create and dictate.Singapore theatre company Emergency Stairs has earned a reputation for boundary-pushing works that generate much discourse among its audiences. Following Offending the Audience in 2017, and Einstein in the Carpark in 2018, FOUR FOUR EIGHT is the third instalment of the company’s Post-Dramatic Series. With FOUR FOUR EIGHT, together with award-winning artists lighting designer Lim Woan Wen and sound artist Darren Ng, Liu continues to explore the possibilities of, and challenge the limitations of what constitutes a theatre space."Please open the curtains." She said. This performance begins long before you step into the bar. Small, deliberate moments will connect you with the artist and his inner world. Through emails and other ephemeral social interactions, you will be drawn into the artist’s processes of creation—the impulses, the loneliness, the struggles, and the triumphs... and we invite you to be part of the creation process. Please write to 448@emergencystairs.org with “I want to open the curtains” to get connected, and do remember to attach an image of your ticket.
