ISAI AMUTHU - Musical Gems of the Tamil Trinity
by Temple of Fine Arts
Synopsis

The Tamil trinity, also known as the Tamil Moovar, were three composers—Muthu Thandavar, Arunachala Kavi and Marimutha Pillai—who had contributed several Tamil compositions that are sung in carnatic music recitals today. While they may be lesser known than the carnatic music trinity, their genius brought structure to the modern format of krithi and padams.

Muthu Thandavar came from a family of music cultivators and temple musicians called isai vellalar. He was one of the earliest architects of the carnatic krithi format and a pioneer of padams.

Honoured by the Thanjavur king, Arunachala Kavi was well-versed in Tamil, Telugu and Sanskrit, and was a master of Kamba Ramayanam and the Tirukkural, both of which were prominent Tamil treatises.

Marimutha Pillai was an ace composer and a devotee of Lord Nataraja of Chidambaram. His mudra (signature) was thillai, and his songs were in the form of nindha stuthi (songs of praise by way of sarcasm), dedicated to Lord Nataraja.

In Isai Amuthu – Musical Gems of the Tamil Trinity, the Temple of Fine Arts ensemble brings to life some of the composers’ rare and recognised works, such as Eesane, Kaalai thooki and Eppadi Manam.

Raga 2018 Nritya Tarang - Spirit of Kuchipudi Dance by Amrita Lahiri
There is a certain dramatic quality, precision and spontaneous energy that makes kuchipudi so exhilarating to watch. With roots in yakshagana, a folk theatre form, it is one of the eight classical dance forms of India based on the ancient Sanskrit text, Natya Shastra. This dance drama was named after a village in Andhra Pradesh, where it was created by the Brahmin villagers and began as a male-only art form.Like other Indian classical dance forms, kuchipudi employs the use of mudras (hand gestures), abhinaya (emphatic facial expressions), rhythmic footwork and music to tell the story. It is identified by its brisk, complex moves, lilting rhythms and sensual curves, and, in philosophy, expresses the eternal human desire to unite with the divine. Most of the performances in the early days included rituals and invocations to the Hindu gods and goddesses.Dancers such as Amrita Lahiri, who is known for her physicality and sprightliness, add their own sense of aesthetics to the form. One of the foremost young performers and choreographers of kuchipudi today, Amrita has been described by critics as a dancer “gifted with a radiant stage presence”. She trained under renowned gurus Leela Samson, Jaikishore Mosalikanti, Anuradha Nehru, Swapnasundari and Seetha Nagajothy, and has also been praised for bringing a new dimension to the dance form.Catch her as she performs a diverse repertoire of works by kuchipudi choreographers, including classic pieces such as Natesha Kautuam and Usha Parinayam, as a well as a tarangam, in which the dancer performs rhythmic patterns on the edge of a brass plate, a trademark of kuchipudi.Musicians:Vasudha Ravi, vocalsLakshmi Krishnan, nattuvangamV M Sai Akileshwar, mridangamSrividya Sriram, violin

The Village 宝岛一村 by Performance Workshop 表演工作坊
“The pinnacle of our era of theatre.”– The Beijing News, 2010“A side effect of watching The Village, besides giving teary applause and standing ovations, is that it induces the viewer an overwhelming desire to hug one’s family in a rib-cracking deadlock and then dragging them to the theatre to watch it again.” – The Straits Times Life!, 2012“Big-hearted”, “accessible”, “humourous” and “obscenely tear-jerking” were some of the phrases used to describe this heartwarming play by internationally celebrated Chinese playwright and director Stan Lai and famed TV producer Wang Wei Zhong.Experience the joys and trials of three families over three generations in a moving production that recaptures the spirit of the village communities, preserves this rapidly disappearing culture and heritage of Taiwan’s Dependents’ Villages, and tells a poignant immigrant story that is no less different from Singapore’s.In the late 1940s, Taiwan experienced an influx of new immigrants from China who were subsequently housed in what became known as Dependents’ Villages. What were supposed to be temporary homes became permanent ones, and a thriving subculture emerged that would vibrantly colour Taiwan’s cultural heritage forever. After an international tour of over 200 shows that saw widespread acclaim and sold-out performances in Taiwan, China, and the US, and standing ovations in Singapore in 2009 and 2012, The Village returns to Esplanade to mark its 10th anniversary.Co-produced by Esplanade – Theatres on the Bay and Performance WorkshopAbout Dependents’ VillagesThese villages thrived for nearly half a decade and more than 800 villages existed, each with their own unique culture and community. Today, less than 200 remain. Inspired by and based on a variety of real-life immigrant experiences, The Village brings you into the lives of these displaced people during this significant period in the history of Taiwan.Upgrade your theatre experience with a pre-show backstage tourLimited Cat 1 tickets at $138.
