The Choir of Gonville and Caius College, Cambridge
'O For the Wings of a Dove' The Choir of Gonville & Caius College, Cambridge University Music Director: Dr Geoffrey Webber 29th August 2017, Tuesday 7:30pm 'O for the wings of a dove' brings together many of the most famous and iconic choral masterpieces from Western Europe. From the thrilling top notes of Allegri's Miserere and its austere chanting the programme moves from the Italian Renaissance to classics from the German and French Romantic repertoires, including Mendelssohn's 'Hear my prayer' with its soaring soprano solo 'O for the wings of a dove'. The programme concludes in England with some of the most-loved choral works from the last century, notably Britten's Festival Cantata 'Rejoice in the Lamb'. This colourful and jubilant work sets a poem by Christopher Smart that takes its inspiration from unusual sources such as the poet's pet cat (and a mouse!) and the mysterious beauty of flowers.
