Tchaikovsky & Arensky Piano Trios
Brownhill Consultancy presents the Incursion Trio's "Tchaikovsky & Arensky," a Tuesday evening concert at the Esplanade Recital Studio. Escape the summer heat of Singapore and take on a breathtaking journey to the summit of Russian romanticism with this passionate program. Written in 1881-1882 and 1894 respectively, the piano trios by Tchaikovsky and Arensky reflect the era's refined melancholia and tumultuous passion.Tchaikovsky's Piano Trio in A minor op. 50, subtitled “In Memory of a Great Artist”, was dedicated to the composer’s close friend, the virtuoso pianist Nikolai Rubinstein. Considered the most difficult piano piece Tchaikovsky has ever written, it became the composer’s own elegy later in 1893, being played at the memorial services in Moscow and St Petersburg. Tchaikovsky’s friendship and music had a significant influence on Arensky’s composition. The former’s epic piano trio had impressed the latter to a great extent and in 1894 Arensky also wrote a trio in memory of a remarkable musician. Arensky dedicated his Piano Trio No. 1 in D minor Op. 32 to Karl Davydov, a friend that Tchaikovsky nicknamed the “Tsar of cellists”. Celebrating Davydov and his achievements, this suite shines a spotlight on the cello. Formed in 2008, Incursion Trio has performed extensively in Singapore and overseas, interpreting a wide range of repertoire including German classic, Russian romantic, French modernist and Singaporean contemporary music. The exquisite rendition of this epic Russian program by the world-class Singaporean musicians Beatrice Lin(piano), Yi Li Siew(violin), and Juan Lin(cello) is sure to be a rare treat to the ears of the music loving public at the Esplanade. For further details visit brownhillconsultancy.com and incursiontrio.com

RICHIE KOTZEN Live in Singapore
LAMC Productions is proud to announce that the Guitar wizard, vocalist and multi-instrumentalist, Richie Kotzen, will be bringing his ‘Salting Earth World Tour’ to Singapore for the very first time on August 21, 2017 at the Esplanade Annexe Studio!Fans are in for a special treat as Kotzen will be performing songs from his impressive 28-year career at his electrifying show in Singapore. The tour comes in support of Kotzen's recently-released 22nd solo album, Salting Earth, on which he plays every instrument.“Salting Earth is another solid collection of songs to add to the Kotzen catalog. Few artists continue to put out new music as often as Kotzen and not only is Kotzen continuing to put out new music, but he keeps doing it at a high level. Salting Earth has a little something for everyone”. - Blue Rocks Review Richie Kotzen has never been an artist known for playing by the rules and that meant putting on the brakes after a nonstop flurry of band-related activity in order to refuel the creative process for the ten heartfelt and hard-hitting songs that comprise his vibrant solo album, Salting Earth. The proof is on display deep within the grooves of Salting Earth, which veers from the balls-out, heads-up declaration of the opening track “End of Earth” to the burning-sky harmonic thrust of “Thunder” to the Prince-like funk-jazz swing of “This Is Life” to the acoustified take-me-as-I-am self-reflection of the album’s final song, “Grammy.” A one man production machine, Kotzen writes all the music and plays every instrument on his solo work. Guitar, bass, drums, piano and more.Kotzen’s previous solo release, 2015’s diverse, far-reaching Cannibals, was also a well- received hit among his core fan base. With his fast playing, fluid sweeping technique, and a soulful singing voice, Kotzen was being mentioned in the same breathe as Steve Vai, Joe Satriani and Tony MacAlpine. Word spread along the Hollywood music scene and Kotzen joined Poison when he was 21 replacing departed C.C. DeVille giving the band more of a blues sound on their Native Tongue release. Kotzen, who once opened for The Rolling Stones on their Bigger Bang tour in 2006, describes his style as a mix of rock, blues, jazz, fusion, and soul music.“When Richie Kotzen picks up his guitar, it literally speaks through him.” - Music RadarIn 2013 Richie joined forces with two giants of the music industry. Billy Sheehan (David Lee Roth, Mr Big, Steve Vai) and Mike Portnoy (Dream Theater, Flying Colors) to form The Winery Dogs. The power trio released two highly successful albums, The Winery Dogs in 2013, and Hot Streak in 2015.While having several lifetimes of albums to his name, bringing music to the people is Richie’s main mission.Kotzen is clearly eager to hit the road. “I know this is going to be a long album cycle of touring, and already we are talking about going to places I’ve never been before,” Kotzen notes. “With the new record being done and knowing dates are being booked around the world, I can feel my creative energy surging once again.”Said energy surge has been seeded quite liberally all throughout Salting Earth, an album that shows Kotzen as the pillar for how to harness newfound creativity in the best light imaginable. Come and dig his Earth!

MIDNIGHT OIL THE GREAT CIRCLE 2017 ...
LAMC Productions is proud to announce that legendary Australian Rock band and agitators, MIDNIGHT OIL, will be bringing their 'The Great Circle 2017' tour to Singapore for the very first time on August 16, 2017 at The Star Theatre, The Star Performing Arts Centre! "The Great Circle 2017" World Tour will see the group's classic lineup with Rob Hirst, Martin Rotsey, Peter Garrett, Jim Moginie & Bones Hillman literally circle around our overheating planet for 6 months, starting and ending with gigs in Sydney. "The Great Circle 2017" World Tour marks Midnight Oil's first shows in 15 years, apart from two stadium benefit concerts (and their related small warmup gigs) in Australia in 2005 and 2009. It will also be the group's most extensive world tour since their classic late 80's/early 90's albums like "Diesel & Dust", "Blue Sky Mining" and "Earth & Sun & Moon" sold over 10 million copies around the globe. Anyone with even a passing knowledge of Australian culture knows the basics of Midnight Oil's story. They are the incendiary post-punk band from Sydney's northern beaches who shunned pop TV shows, forging a fierce bond with their audience through nonstop gigging and jagged Ozrock classics like "Back On The Borderline", "Bus To Bondi" and "Don't Wanna Be The One". They are the musical innovators who turned high tech, anti-jingoistic polemic into hits like "Power & The Passion", "U.S. Forces" and "When The Generals Talk". "After so much time away, the Oils were still astonishingly tight." - The Daily Telegraph on Midnight Oil's First Reunion show They are the activists whose social justice campaigning includes "The Dead Heart", "Redneck Wonderland", "Beds Are Burning" and hijacking the 2000 Olympic Games Closing Ceremony with their "Sorry" suits. They are the committed humanists and environmentalists who brought us anthems like "Blue Sky Mine", "Forgotten Years" and "Say Your Prayers" plus a string of protests from the Tasmanian wilderness and the Jabiluka Uranium mine near Kakadu to mid-town Manhattan where they unforgettably stopped traffic outside the Exxon building after the Alaskan oil spill. Their music makes you feel. Their lyrics make you think. And the combined impact live onstage is nothing less than a call to action. In a dangerously warming world of Trump, Hanson, Petry and Le Pen the voice of Midnight Oil clearly takes on renewed relevance; they have always been a band that both reflects and shapes "the temper of the times". Clarion calls like "it's better to die on your feet than live on your knees" may have been intended for earlier eras but they resonate more than ever in these days of 'alternative facts'. At one level "The Great Circle 2017" simply reflects the geographic reality that the tour will loop around the world and circle Australia. At another level the name clearly implies the planet itself but it has a further meaning too. Sailors, and airmen use "the great circle" to navigate the globe because on a sphere the shortest distance between two points is not usually a straight line. How appropriate for a group who has always been deeply engaged with the world around them but whose career path has never been linear.

Pesta Raya - Malay Festivals of Art...
The lives of six pained characters are interwoven together, each checkered by cycles of abuse—physical, emotional and psychological—and rocked by violence, self-inflicted and otherwise. This includes sobering episodes of incest, domestic abuse, lifelong drug abuse and sexual violence. Underlying this is a deep, simple yearning for happiness and love that they share. Main2 was commissioned by Esplanade for the very first Pesta Raya – Malay Festival of Arts in 2002, and was the first Malay language play to be staged at the arts centre. Written by Aidli ‘Alin’ Mosbit, it is a warts-and-all portrayal of the Malay community and its social strata, framed by the concept of main, literally meaning “the games we play”. This new staging is directed by Aidli ‘Alin’ Mosbit, and features a new cast made up of Al-Matin Yatim, Farez Najid, Farhana M Noor, Hatta Said, Munah Bagharib and Suhaili Safari. Bear witness as each character find themselves in “transit” after lifelong games of chasing happiness.

One of Indonesia's rising indie-alternative musical groups, Payung Teduh, makes its way to Singapore this July. For Is (vocalist/guitarist) and Comi (double bassist), what started out as jamming sessions in college became a full-fledged love affair with their self-styled music, which has since flourished with the addition of drummer Cito and “guitarlele” player Ivan.Warm and fuzzy, mellow yet breezy, the signature sound that the four-man outfit has carved out for themselves blends folk, keroncong, pop and jazz with a touch of the ’60s—and their musical horizons are still expanding. Deep and emotionally-driven, the lyrics too have been described as poetry that haunts the mind with a sense of vulnerability.Released in 2010, their debut album, Self-Titled, features the hit song, Angin Pujaan Hujan. The group has gone on to release two other albums, Dunia Batas, and the most recent Live and Loud.Join the boy wonders as they embrace you with lush instrumentation and the songs that their fans hold dear.

Performed by Gamelan Garasi Seni Benawa (Indonesia) & Metropolitan Festival Orchestra (Singapore)What would you sacrifice to save your lover?A young man is kept distant from his lover by a strict and unforgiving society. He'd go through hell to be with her, but when a deal with the devil goes sour, hell comes to him instead. This collaboration across cultures brings together a 20-piece Indonesian ensemble and members of a western orchestra to conjure the bewitiching live score for the new film, Setan Jawa. A lavish black-and-white work of suspenseful cinema directed by revered Indonesian filmmaker, Garin Nugroho, Setan Jawa's soundtrack has been jointly written by award-winning Australian composer/conductor Iain Grandage and renowned Indonesian composer Rahayu Supanggah.Inspired by the classic horror film Nosferatu and the rich imagery of Javanese mythology, Setan Jawa is a silent film of lavish and arresting imagery. The stunning score has been created during an extensive and insightful period of exchange between Australian and Indonesian musicians, with theatrical heavy-hitter Grandage joining forces with Supanggah, best known in Melbourne for scoring Robert Wilson's majestic I La Galigo. The result is a work rich with mysticism and theatrical sensuality, and an event worth selling your soul to catch.Directed by Garin Nugroho(Indonesia)Composed by Rahayu Supanggah(Indonesia) and Iain Grandage (Australia)Setan Jawa was commissioned by Arts Centre Melbourne, Melbourne Symphony Orchestra and Esplanade - Theatres on the Bay.
Victoria Memorial Hall 1930
The long running Young Virtuoso Recital Series has been a notable showcase of Singapore’s brightest young pianists over the years. The upcoming installment of the series will take a step further by featuring, for the first time, a non-pianist: cellist Loke Hoe Kit. Hoe Kit has been described by the Straits Times as ‘probably the most visible local cellist to emerge’ from his generation. He studied at the Mannes College of Music, New York, and is a protégé of esteemed American cellist Nathaniel Rosen (himself a protégé of the legendary Piatigorsky). As soloist, Hoe Kit has made appearances across Asia and the USA.Pianist Khor Shang Jin and organist Joanna Paul will accompany Hoe Kit in this recital, which pays tribute to the evening’s venue, Victoria Memorial Hall (VMH). VMH is Singapore’s premiere historic concert venue; much of its fascinating history has however been forgotten today. 1930 was the year VMH started serving as a concert hall. Many of the world’s greatest musical legends, from Arthur Rubinstein to Benjamin Britten, have performed there since. In 1980, following a refurbishment, VMH’s auditorium was named Victoria Concert Hall. Hoe Kit’s recital will feature works drawn from the programmes played at VMH over the years by such cello legends as Gregor Piatigorsky, Emanuel Feuermann and Gaspar Cassadó. In addition, history will be made with the Singapore premiere of Marcel Dupré’s Sonata for Cello and Organ; this will be a rare occasion where organ accompaniment is utilised in a solo string recital in Singapore.
The Singapore Chinese Dance Theatre will be putting up its fifth core dance production “HEARTiculation” on 21 and 22 July 2017 at 8.00pm at SOTA Drama Centre Theatre. The hour-long performance will feature original dance creations by Artistic Director Madam Lim Moi Kim, Principal Choreographer Neo Jenny, invited Guest Choreographer from Hong Kong Wu Kam-Ming, Ms. Yong Yong Xin, and Ms. Hoi Ka Men from China. Each dance piece with its own uniqueness, articulating an inner expression from each of the choreographer's heart.
