The Studios 2017 WITH/OUT conceptualised by Loo Zihan
Conceptualised by Loo ZihanBased on Completely With/Out CharacterDevised by Paddy Chew, in collaboration with Alvin Tan and Haresh SharmaA commission by The StudiosIn 1999, The Necessary Stage presented Completely With/Out Character, a docu-theatre monologue devised by Paddy Chew, in collaboration with playwright Haresh Sharma and director Alvin Tan. The monologue was a candid account of Paddy’s experiences as the first individual to come out as a person living with HIV in Singapore. Unfortunately, Paddy passed on a few months after the end of the production. Since then, although medical advancements now allow HIV-positive individuals to lead relatively normal lives, the ignorance and prejudice surrounding AIDS still remains pervasive today. With/Out is an interpretation of Paddy’s monologue, conceptualised by performance and moving-image artist Loo Zihan. It was first presented in 2015 to rave reviews as part of the M1 Singapore Fringe Festival. This 2017 commission by The Studios presents a reimagining of this monologue, and examines its relationship to the written and video documents. Through the use of archived content and new material created by Loo Zihan, in collaboration with award-winning performer Janice Koh, With/Out weaves together a multimedia experience that not only preserves our collective memory of Paddy’s monologue, but also relates it to our contemporary experience. With/Out was first developed in residence at Centre 42, and commissioned by the M1 Singapore Fringe Festival in 2015. For more info on artist, visit www.loozihan.com Photo Credit: Tuckys PhotographyPlease note that With/Out is a free standing performance with limited floor seating. The performance will include photo and video documentation. Huayi 华艺节 2017 Actor, Forty The Necessary Stage (Singapore) 演员四十 必要剧场(新加坡)
In real life, there are no rehearsals and no second takes. Actor, Forty features Golden Horse Award-winner Yeo Yann Yann returning to the Chinese theatre stage in a special Huayi commission. This new original monologue sees Yeo collaborating with Cultural Medallion recipients, director Alvin Tan and playwright Haresh Sharma of The Necessary Stage. Candid and conversational, it examines the myriad identities that we take on and cast off in life—just as an actor does when she adopts different roles. Blurring the lines between actor and character, Yeo plays an actress who has just been cast in a contemporary remake of Summer Snow《女人四十》, a 1995 Hong Kong film about a 40-something woman dealing with difficult family issues. The actress has a secret that she is struggling to keep under wraps—she is turning 40 and expecting her first child. Faced with the challenge of juggling a globetrotting job and raising a child, she confronts her hopes and fears. Huayi 华艺节 2017 Cloud Gate 2 - A Triple Bill (Taiwan) 云门2 (台湾)
The much-anticipated Singapore debut of Cloud Gate 2, featuring many of Taiwan’s most talented young dancers and two award-winning choreographers. Reputed for their potent technique and polished skill, the sister company of the internationally celebrated Cloud Gate Dance Theatre of Taiwan, presents three riveting dance works by innovative Taiwanese choreographers Cheng Tsung-lung and Huang Yi. Huang Yi’s Wicked Fish is “fast-paced, exciting and fluid” (Dance Europe), with dancers effortlessly mimicking a shoal of fish in a puzzle-like choreography of twists, turns and lifts. The Wall, by the company’s artistic director, Cheng Tsung-lung, is a powerful exploration of protection and segregation, a dramatic march of contrasts that is both “sinuous and balletic” (The New York Times), with ever-changing formations of striking complexity. The final piece Beckoning, also by Cheng, is a playful and poetic work inspired by the colourful street dancing rituals of Taoist temple parades. Witness the vibrant energy of these gutsy young dancers and be thrilled by this exciting company – Cloud Gate 2 – A Triple Bill is a dance event not to be missed.Visit us at www.esplanade.com/huayi

“You will see no play” Four nameless performers, in a space without boundaries. No plot, no love nor sorrow, no more roller coaster narrative. And the stage does not represent another place. What then shall happen in theatre? When all pretence is stripped, is everything then genuine? In 1966, Austrian playwright Peter Handke rose to prominence with Offending the Audience, a play that challenged perceptions of theatre and rocked the establishment of the day. Five decades later, this special Huayi commission sees Young Artist Award recipient Liu Xiaoyi leading a creative team of the most outstanding Singaporean theatre artists—Nelson Chia, Oliver Chong, Li Xie, Ang Gey Pin, Darren Ng and Lim Woan Wen—to devise and create an original adaptation through relentless experimentation and dialogue. Pushing new boundaries in theatre, they rework the antitheatre classic for a modern audience. There will be a post-performance talk after each performance. Visit us at www.esplanade.com/huayi

Don’t Forget to Remember Me & Don’t Know, Don’t Care Written by Haresh SharmaDirected by Peter Sau Set Design by Vincent LimLighting Design by Dorothy PngSound Design by Bani Haykal What are the secrets that a family keeps from others—and do family members keep one another in the dark sometimes? The Necessary Stage’s Theatre for Seniors presents Family Secrets, a double bill of well-loved plays by Cultural Medallion winner Haresh Sharma, about two families encountering change through illness afflicting their senior members, and how they rise above the challenge to grow stronger and closer than ever. Don’t Forget to Remember MeWhen Madam Wong begins her retirement, all she can think of is enjoying her golden years with rest and serenity, surrounded by family and friends. However, rest turns into restlessness as she starts to lose her short-term memory. Her dream of a peaceful life soon becomes a nightmare of remembering and forgetting. First commissioned by the Alzheimer’s Disease Association, Don’t Forget to Remember Me is a touching and thought-provoking play that deals with the trials and tribulations of people with dementia and their struggles to come to terms with their illness. In Singapore, about five percent of people above 65 have dementia. It is an illness that causes brain cells to die at a faster rate than normal. This leads to failing memory, deterioration of intellectual function and personality changes. Dementia is not normal ageing. Cast:Al-Matim YatimCatherine SngDoreen TohPadma Krishnan Don’t Know, Don’t CareOriginally commissioned by HCA Hospice Care, Don't Know, Don't Care looks at a family trying to deal with terminal illness within the household. Four young lovers, without a care for the consequences, flee to a magical forest in search of true love. But the course of true love, as we all know, never did run smooth. Hong Kong’s acclaimed Dionysus Contemporary Theatre returns to Huayi, with a sexy, madcap Cantonese adaptation of Shakespeare’s well-loved romantic comedy, A Midsummer Night’s Dream. Golden Horse Award-winner Anthony Wong and acclaimed Hong Kong actress Candice Yu sizzle onstage as the Fairy King and Queen, Oberon and Titania, alongside talented actors Alex Lam, Rosa Maria Velasco, Kate Yeung and Angus Chan, as the intrepid young lovers. In the forest, the Fairy King and Queen, possessed by jealousy, engage in a fight that makes the seasons change, the tides churn and the spirits flee. At the same time, a bumbling group of amateur actors attempt to stage a play—a rib-tickling “tragedy” of epic proportions. The magical forest drives all its inhabitants crazy, with love in all shapes and sizes, from the throes of passionate infatuation to vows of enduring commitment, from unrequited love to a tangled web of interchangeable affections. A striking visual feast with gorgeous costumes, Dionysus Contemporary Theatre brings you a fresh and fun take on the Shakespearean classic. Written by Haresh SharmaDirected by Mohd Fared JainalA co-production with Teater Ekamatra“A badly decomposed corpse was found floating on Singapore River early this morning…”Hope, the root word of “hoping”, “hopeful”, “hopefulness”, and the like; a word that serves as the thrust for the condition, the needs, the wants of each and every human being. A father, a mother, to a son; and two friends. Human beings, each one of them. Desperate, dejected, whose fate remain undecided, whose dreams remain uncertain, and whose ambitions remain undefined, only because deep in their hearts, the seeds of hope were sown. Probably, without hope, without hoping, without being hopeful, their lives would be untainted, unscathed, undamaged, and not naked; devoured to the skeletal frames of their existence.First produced in 1994, this version of Haresh Sharma’s Hope is adapted into Malay by Zulfadli Rashid.
