Ponniyin Selvan

Ponniyin Selvan (The Son of Ponni) is inspired by the historical novel of the same name that centres on a number of real historical characters and incidents.

960 AD, in Thanjavur, the Chola king Sundara Chozhar ails while his elder son, crown prince Aditya Karikalan sulks in Kanchi, his second son Arulmozhivarman wars in Lanka and his daughter Kundhavai holds her own counsel in Pazhaiyarai.

On the banks of the Veeranarayana Lake, a city celebrates the 18th day of Adi (when the lake is filled with fresh water). Watching this celebration is the resourceful young man, Vanthiyathevan carrying two messages sent by Karikalan, one for his father, the King and the other for his sister Princess Kundhavai.  There, he meets the mysterious Vaishnavite Alwarkadiyan Nambi.

We travel with Vanthithevan as he uses his wiles on the bewitching Nandini, the new wife of the powerful Chancellor Periya Pazhuvettarayar, with a terrible revenge agenda of her own. In Kadambur, Periya Pazhuvettarayar plots to overthrow Sundara Cholar's children and bring their uncle Madurantakan to the throne. From the Pandya kingdom come a group of deadly assassins, the Abathuthavigal lead by the wizard Ravidasan to avenge the death of their king Veerapandyan at the hands of Karikalan.

Vanthiyathevan meets the beautiful Kundhavai and falls in love with her. He is sent by her to Lanka to bring back her younger brother Prince Arulmozhivarman also called" Ponniyin Selvan". Vanthiyathevan is taken across the sea by the wild and wilful boatwoman, Poonkuzhali.

In Lanka, we meet Parthibendra Pallavan and a mute saviour woman Mandakini, Vanthiyathevan is startled by her resemblance to Nandini.

In Thanjavur, the young Kadambur princess Vanathi finds her strength and voice in her love for Ponniyin Selvan. The Abathuthavigal set the plan in motion but Sundara Chozhar is saved by the mute Mandakini and Ponniyin Selvan is saved by an elephant.

Back in Kadumbur, Karikalan rages into the fort with Vandiyathevan to meet Sambuvarayar, Pazhuvetarayar, Pallavan, Kandamaran and other lords. However, Karikalan is a prince ready to meet his end in hands of his true love who is none other than Nandini. Karikalan's past of killing Veera Pandyan catches up with him and he is killed by the Abathuthavigal. A whole nation mourns. Periya Pazhuvettarayar takes the blame. Will Arulmozhivarman become the new Chozha king? Long live the prince! With a new crown, it's back to celebrations!
