Limelight 2017 by Catholic High School Choir
Synopsis

The Edward Becheras Choir is a premier, multi-award winning Soprano Alto Tenor and Bass (SATB) choir under the guidance and instruction of internationally-acclaimed choral director and conductor, Professor Nelson Kwei and Mr Kane Teo. Well regarded in the local choral community and acknowledged as one of the top Secondary School choirs in Singapore, the Edward Becheras Choir hail from humble origins almost half a century ago. The choir has evolved to become a sophisticated group known for producing quality music.

This rare choir showcases male sopranos and altos - usually sung by female voices. Through months of rigorous practising of technique, the choir has honed the skill of singing with a falsetto, creating a beautiful tone quality unique to male upper voices. They pride themselves with a prodigious repertoire of choral songs, ranging from the classics to modern selections, from timely to dynamic pieces, providing choristers with exposure towards the various styles of choral music. Holding a multitude of awards to its name, the choir is also often invited to participate in workshops and masterclasses.

Under the guidance of esteemed conductor Professor Nelson Kwei, and with the principles of hard work, pride and a zero tolerance towards imperfection at the heart of the choir, the Edward Becheras Choir continues to provide a holistic choral experience for its members. The Choir’s motto "Pride. Passion. Performance" is a reminder to all singers to take pride in their abilities, be passionate about singing and to give their best in every performance.

Raga Rasanubhava: Musical expressions of Swathi Thirunal and Balamuralikrishna by Bhaskar's Arts Academy
The compositions of Swathi Thirunal and Balamuralikrishna embody the complete and synergistic elements of music and dance. As composers for dance, their works were a fine balance of rhythm and gait—with much scope for panchanadai (the five basic gaits) and theermanams (rhythmic patterns)—making the pieces highly danceable. As musicians, their ragas (scales) and lyrics lent themselves so well to abhinaya (expressions), that in the hands of sensitive musicians and soulful dancers, had the ability to move the audience.Join musicians and dancers from Bhaskar’s Arts Academy as they explore the compositions of these two seminal composers.Swathi ThirunalA king who lived around 200 years ago, Swathi Thirunal was also an artist whose creative vision took music beyond geographical borders. His work revealed more than bhakthi (devotion), and was essentially his philosophical outlook on life. Aside from his mastery of his mother tongue, Malayalam, and his profound knowledge of Sanskrit, Swathi Thirunal also composed in Telugu, Kannada, Marathi and Hindustani.BalamuralikrishnaKnown for publishing songs in all 72 melakartha ragas (fundamental scales) while he was still a teenager, Balamuralikrishna personified creativity and was consistently defying established traditions. Because of that, the carnatic world was gifted with ragas such as Rohini, Lavangi, Mahathi, Prathimadhyamavathi, Sumukham, and many more.Carnatic Composers is a series of concerts that explores the rich diversity of carnatic music through the composers who have defined and redefined the genre from the 15th century to the present.

Raga Pitamaha: Melodies of Annamacharya and Purandara Dasa by SIFAS Alumni
In 15th century India, under the royal patronage of the Vijayanagara kingdom, two poets, Annamacharya and Purandara Dasa, brought forth the rich kirtana paddhati (song format) that we are familiar with today.Although both are celebrated as Vaishnava saints (devotees of Vishnu), their compositions praised different deities through various recurrent themes such as sringara (love), as well as secular and social ones. Their incorporation of popular vernacular and folk ragas (melodic scales) into mainstream music also contributed to their legendary status as pitamahas (doyens). While scholars remain uncertain about whether the two stalwarts ever crossed paths due to their five-decade-long gap, legend points towards a young Purandara Dasa meeting an aged Annamacharya at the famed abode of Lord Venkateshwara in Tirupati, both of whom were immersed in devotional singing.Featuring Sripriya Vijay, Rachana Murali and Lavanya Balachandran on vocals, Bharati Murali on violin, Pallavarajan Nagendran on mridangam, and Viknash Balakrishnan on ghatam, join the SIFAS Alumni as they perform the eclectic compositions of these two legendary music scholars.Carnatic Composers is a series of concerts that explores the rich diversity of carnatic music through the composers who have defined and redefined the genre from the 15th century to the present.

Hansel and Gretel In Collaboration with Esplanade - Theatres on the Bay As part of POPS
The forest is dark and cold as nightBut what do we see there in the clearing's light?A house made of sweets, oh what a delight! How could a hungry child resist such a sightBut not all that’s sweet is cause for joy,For who lives within has planned this ploy.  Beloved by children and adults alike the world over, the story of Hansel and Gretel has inspired many adaptations for the stage. One of the most popular of these is Engelbert Humperdinck’s 1893 opera which remains as popular today as it was when it was first performed. Filled with lush, romantic melodies and German folk songs, Hansel and Gretel is one of the great operas to be experienced live.In this adventure for the whole family, Orchestra of the Music Makers is joined by an international and local cast of singers for this semi-staged staged concert performance, the Volare Treble Voices by Darius Lim, directed by Edith Podesta and conducted by Chan Tze Law.Come, venture into the forest for an unforgettable, fun-filled performance.Chan Tze Law, conductorEdith Podesta, directorDarius Lim, Chorus MasterStefanie Iranyi, HanselFelicitas Fuchs, GretelFiona Campbell, Gertrud & Gingerbread WitchWarwick Fyfe, PeterEvangeline Ng, Sleep FairyRachel Lim, Dew FairyOrchestra of the Music MakersVolare Treble Voices
